Don’t look like there is much call for your skill’s in that fleet Andrew ! Looks like they buy a motor and just adapt the previous operators colours and put the signwriting on !!Did you go to Northampton in the Peterbilt ■■? Cheers Dennis.

hi dennis
they just run em as they arrived down at walters.we went in my car to northampton as mrs cooper isn’t too keen to go out in her husbands… “noisy van” as she sometimes calls it.
regards andrew

Quite right as well Mrs. Cooper !! The only truck my wife would get into was my Iveco Horse box when we were taking the horses racing ! I’ll try to put a pic of it on the thread just for you to see what a nice job it was !! Cheers Dennis.

hi dennis,
did that iveco have an 8 pot gardner or a detroit?
regards andrew

This is the sister to the blue ERF but whether it was new to this firm or not I don’t know.

hi all,
i have had an email from photobucket telling me that i have no band width until feb.31st,so if anyone has any truck photos with a welsh connection, please feel free to post them.thanks.
regards andrew

You’ll be waiting a while for that…

Here’s one to keep you going:

A Mk.2 Atkinson ‘Silver Knight’ with a 220 Rolls Royce Eagle and ZF 6-speed box.

Feb 31st will be a long time coming.

Hi Andrew,
It doesn’t cost much to upgrade to pro on photobucket, you have unlimited bandwidth then,or upload them on tinypic.
Cheers Dave.

Hey Dave whats all this B*****ks about up-grading !!! We haven’t even got the pics into the first Bucket yet !!! I’ve just finished snapping all the pics to-day (500 aprox ) am going to put them onto discs when I go into town then stand back ( but don’t hold your breath ) We’ll try and drip feed them on to the site ( don’t wan’t to get you too excited too soon and cause you to have a funny turn !! )( you notice I used the Proverbial " We’ll ") Cheers Dennis.

Dennis,I drip feeded mine off the site on saturday, about 300,took me all bloody day to post them back on,then had a thought if I go to pro on photobucket, they will put them back on. What a D**K no chance, never mind, damage limitation, will not be doing that again. But if you want bandwidth it costs $25 a year to upgrade, not bad really.
Cheers Dave.

STRAIGHT EIGHT:
Excellent pics, brilliant thread! Reckon the Blue ECX is ex Securicor, they had a big batch of them the same time they bought a large batch of Scania 4 series.

Hmmm… I’d still guess at Pentalver , what with the Hampshire reg an’ all!

I’d still guess Securicor, as far as i am aware, the ECX’s Pentavler bought were all high-roof versions all fitted with amber beacons. That colour blue is a wee bit too light to be Pentavlers (not that i’m gettin picky!! ).

We’ll see  It looks like it came from Meachers/KL Commercials anyway - Roadways had HX51 FNA to FNF, which were similar motors to this.

I just didn’t rate RR diesels both from an operators experience and also what I gathered from other operators over the years I was in the buisness . I remember the ERF sales director telling me that ERF took 1500 Gardners,1000 ■■■■■■■ and 500 RR per year. The bulk of the RR chassis going to the big Oil cos as economy/reliability was not high on their agenda – just the net price of the vehicle !! Bewick.

hi dennis,
i totally agree with you,i recall my father telling me that when he was driving for joint motorways during 1969 they bought three 6 by 2 atki. units,in preparation for the weight increase which didn’t happen until 1983,anyway,they had rollers in them and they were useless, they couldn’t live with the e registered two pedal beaver my old man had and when the rollers went wrong it was a costly business.after that joints still bought gardners but mainly ■■■■■■■■

Yea Andrew I believe the RR engined chassis only sold for 3 main reasons 1 It must be a decent motor because its a RR. 2 "Please buy one off me Mr.Operator as the Factory are twisting my arm to shift some ( and I’ll make sure you get a chance of a Gardner or two in my next allocation Promise !! ) 3 The RR chassis is on a special price at the moment 25% discount ( but don’t tell anybody as I’m doing you a big favour !) Then when the salesman got his order for 3 (in Joints case ) he then couldn’t get out of the office fast enough and round the corner as he wouldn’t be able to keep his face straight !! and then he’d ps his self laughing !! But the smile would soon be wiped off his face when the "chickens started coming home to roost " and he got bollocking after bollocking from the extremely P*ed off Operator !! How does that senario sound Andrew !! Cheers Dennis.

You main road artic monkeys didn’t know you were born, you should have had a few years on tippers off the beaten track,no rolls royce or gardner engines, just cheap Bedford or Perkins under powered moters with not enough gears. Come from Port Talbot to just before the Storey Arms with a boiling engine, carry water from a brook to put in the radiator whilst the engine is still running,to stop it spewing boiling water over you. They should have made an advert featuring us tipper boys for Hovis Bread,we had it much harder than that kid pushing the bike on a cobbled street, phew.
Cheers tired old Dave.

We had a couple of Foden S80’s at Tilcon with the R/R Eagle 220 coupled to the Foden 12 speed box and to be honest they were no real trouble. I re linered one of them around the 4 year mark but otherwise they were fine, though the 265’s were better still. ■■■■■■■ were too bloomin heavy ( until the L10 appeared) as we couldn’t get a full 20 ton payload compared to the Rolls and Gardner’s and every load we did was always costed on us having 20 ton on board, the manager wouldn’t let you off the weighbridge under 30.30 tonnes and would send you back for 4 or 5 hundredweight!
Dave, we used to note where the cattle water troughs were in the fields when we headed Manchester way through Buxton so that we were never too far from a radiator top up if required, though we usually made it ok.

Pete.
