shrewsbury foreman cliff ashley loaded for tanks and drums goodlass road, liverpool.

yes tony you are right d661 could go well.here’s one of two scania’s that didn’t,mike preece seen here before heading back to shropshire in what alun jones (joint’s boss) called a swedish bedford.

Good shots of real motors Andrew but I never converted any of our tandems I couldn’t justify the expense so we started re-quipping with new Task tri-axles built to our own spec. Did you ever deliver coil to Braby’s in Aintree ? A firm I took over in 1974 McGuffie Transport ran loads of new 45 gal drums out of there (236 per load ) mainly up to Whitehaven but periodically to Middlesborough/ Hull/ Purfleet & Fawley. We carried on until about 83 when the Whitehaven job dried up but it was a good job while it lasted Cheers Dennis.

hi dennis,
i have never even heard of them mate, joint’s had some ■■■■■ trailers to be honest, though to be fair they had a hard life what with animal shunters and the continual abuse on scrap related work, here’s a picture of my mate stan leaving the lorry park in fort william in my f16 taken in september 2006.

Only ever ran a handful of Volvos over the years – didn’t reckon them ! What is the trailer behind the F16 Cheers Dennis.

hi dennis,
in business it’s all down to the numbers.the trailer was a montracon that i bought up in sandycroft north wales.

Article from an American magazine, ‘Transmission Topics’, which was an in-house publication by Eaton Corporation. It features one of John Raymond’s Mk.2 ‘Silver Knight’ Atkinsons being experimentally fitted with a 10-speed Fuller behind its 180 Gardner.

Atkinson never offered the option as, theoretically, the torque output in crawler exceeded the rating of the Kirkstall rear axle. The listed option was to keep the 6-speed box and fit a 2-speed rear axle instead. My Mk.2 Atkinson has a Fuller behind a 180 and I think’s a great combination, geared for a top speed in the mid-60s but still with good hill-climbing ability and faster gear changes. So far the axle is holding up, 31 years after the conversion! On its 3rd gearbox, though…

I know of a couple of other Atkis in preservation that have been converted to the same spec. I wonder if John Raymond converted any more like this one?

Anyway, a reminder of journey times before the motorway network was established, too!

hi,
thanks for an excellent contribution again 240 gardner.when i was a kid in the 70’s the welsh drivers had a saying:

gardner made an engine,
atki made a shed,
they sold it to john raymond and painted it red.

regards andrew

A couple of the photos that I took of the miners strike iron ore convoy (mid 1980,s ? ). Coming round the roundabout at the Magor junction all the windows protected with wire mesh. Also stopped any bricks coming in my direction. Know nothing about the trucks but the driver of the Transcon is waving the fingers of his left hand, must have had cramp. Have got a few of Read,s taken in the sam
e place.

Hi Numbum,
Great pics,a lot of tippers from this area were hauling into Buildwas power staion during the miners strike, same as yours, had mesh on the windows also the names painted out. Quite a good earner, just sad that it was at the expense of hardworking blokes fighting for their livelyhoods.
Cheers Dave.
