charles footman’s colours are damask red and arum white, both these shades were from the former british leyland group.when i restored my f88 i used damask red on that.was the firm k.fell?
regards andrew

Hiya Andrew yes it was K. Fell &co and also J.B. Hudson Ltd. and J. L. Ion Ltd. all in the same deal . The 3 firms were owned at the time I took them over by Davy & co. (Grange) Ltd. Old man Davy had died in '64 and his son John carried on and did infact expand the firm with aquitions of Hudson’s& Ions and one or two odd A licence buys then in about '1970 I think he lost interest and from running a fleet of around 30 he let it dwindle down to 4 tractors/7 trailers 2 6wheeler & 2 4 wheeler flats . I wanted the firm mainly for the freehold depot adjacent to a big customer of both of us ( Libby’s).Cheers Dennis.

hello boys,
re: g800 hth i absolutely loved that 1748 merc.billy was an old mate of my father’s as were all the management and long serving staff from joints.my father went and drove for them 2 days after i was born in 1965.he left in the early 70’s to start what has since become our family business.i used to get alot of stick for being so young and being billy’s nightman/weekend driver.she would fly over the beacons and anywhere else for that matter.going to swindon one night i passed a harringway f16 triple deck cattle float on the bank after the old 7 bridge, half an hour later as i was leaving leigh delamare services the f16 driver flagged me down and asked what was in that fully freighted merc, cause i’m f…g! empty and mine goes well!billy had two man’s after that.dennis,i remember seeeing both bewick and k fell motors.was the hudson’s the same firm as the recovery people who own a green diamond t that i’ve seen on the old north of england road run many times?they used to tag onto us at shap and park up at carlisle truckstop with us on the saturday night.
regards andrew.

Thats explains a lot .I thought you were a lucky bugger too drive Billys truck.I only met him once when he came too pick up a trailer from Shepphards in Manchester. He seemed a nice man but a lucky one too I would have loved too drive his 1748 ! Is it true that Alun Jones went too tialand too start up a haulge firm there all was that a rummour. He had a tia bride .He was really good too me and he got on with my dad really well.Keep on putting great pictures on this site.

hi,
billy wasn’t lucky to drive that truck,he deserved it,he was a very good loyal hard worker who believe me earned that truck,he drove all kinds of crap for years before he graduated to a new motor, his first was a new seddon on a p reg.if i could fault anything about billy he was "bit hard on the interior"as several now ex girlfriends of mine regularly compained about the scrap brush being on the bottom bunk    g800 was supposed to be his last tractor, though billy being billy worked that one and two more after it right up to the end of joint’s trading.i wouldn’t listen to a tenth of the rumours about alun and thailand,he will be 60 this june and now enjoys the quiet life at home in kenfig hill.

here’s one of tondu based dai. davies gems from his ex neighbour blue line transport.(now a housing estate)

good mate graham bellman used to work for j.shone in buckley clwyd, they were seen regularly throughout south wales as they worked mainly for british steel and therefore were frequent visitors to ebbw vale, port talbot etc.they would have finished around the mid-90’s?

Hiya yes the origional firm was J. B. Hudson Ltd who ran 5 “A” licence motors as well as the Garage .Then when Maggie Bowman died in 1960 (she was the old mans Daughter ) I believe there was death duties to pay so her son sold the Haulage side to Athersmith Bros, Barrow-in- Furness. Then in June 1966 Athersmiths sold J B Hudson Ltd. to Davy& Co Milnthorpe mainly because they had been unable to persuade the L. A. to allow them to transfer the motors into Barrow .In June 1976 just about 10 years to the previous sale Bewick Transport took J B Hudson over with Fells ect. There were two motors still lettered as J B Hudson a 1972 K reg 6 wheeler flat and a 1974 Seddon 32/4 R R220/?/Group .There were two origional Hudson customers left in Kendal ( K shoes & Turbine manufactures Gilkes & Gordon ) as well as a number of customers in the footwear component trade around Northampton .

PS the repair side of the old J B Hudson firm was re-named Hudson Engineers at the time of the sale of the haulage side. Hudson Engineers also went into Crane hire alongside the repair buisness . They were Leyland dealers as well for many years and when Leyland started losing their way Hudsons began selling ERF also. From memory Hudsons Engineers ceased trading in mid 90s .

Hi Dennis,
Nearly all the South Wales long distance firms have used the Hereford to Shrewsbury area’s as changover points for the last 50 years, even this side the border drivers have been on changover for South Wales firms. Owens of Llanelli have operating centres from Ludlow to Shrewsbury these days, have a look on Vosa operator search.
Cheers Dave.

Hiya Dave I accept that these towns were used but my question was why ? We used Daventry over many years as this was the point that our night men could hit and return in a shift . Then the Daventry Drivers could tip and load and return to Daventry during the day !!

Hi Dennis,
Andrew will answer your question better than I can,but I would think its a case of where you could get drivers, and also a handy base between South and North Wales,as I believe a lot of their work was from Shotton.
Cheers Dave.
