Mrsteel:
Good afternoon Coop,
The photo of JR’S yard was probably taken when I worked there.
Looking at the photo there are some loaded trls near the garage door and one appears to be loaded with mt cages for the Ford Axle plant in Swansea or they may have been for Cam gears in Resolven. Memories !
Cheers, Allan
Hi Allan,
Thanks for the reply. I’m guessing that period when you worked for JR,Was when you had a new F86 on an N reg? As an aside,I have never seen pictures of JR’s 86’s,I think they had two? Maybe this old yard shot was taken around that era?
Regards Andrew.

Hiya,
Why at anytime of day was there always a line up of lorries just
standing and not earning as in the picture.
Evening Coop,
JR had two F86s , ONY F807 808. I had 807 iirc ,long time ago.
They had both been on the Witney / Oxford change over manned by Roy Fowler and Eddie Creed. Again memories from way back.
Cheers, Allan

Morning Allan, if I rember correctly the first F86 Raymonds had was BTG 551J, I remember doing a comparison report for technical college as part of my course work where I compared the F86 with an Atkinson BTG 550J which I believe was the first Atkinson he had that had power steering.
I can’t remember if I threw the report in the rubbish whem we moved house a couple of years ago.
Cloth cap,
Good morning Bob,
I can remember the Atki 550J but in all honesty not the 86 551J.
My memory must be getting a tad rusty.
I drove ATX 504J at one point.
Cheers, Allan

I remember ATX 504J, it was almost written off when it was involved in accident where a man left a note saying he was going to commit suicide and before the police could locate him he just drove straight into 504J.
When it was reurned after repairs they had painted the radiator cowl, which made it stand out from the others.
Hiya,
Never got a replay as to why Raymonds in their Atki period
and at their old yard, immaterial of time of day always
have a lot of units parked facing the fence. Not earning.
Harry Gill
Hiya,
Iirc I put a post on this some time ago.
Some of the units you saw were painted ready for the road but not registered.
If your unit needed to be in the garage they would put the plates on a new one from the bottom park and off you’d go.
Unpainted units were kept on the family farm a few miles away and brought to Bridgend to be painted as and when required.
When I worked there i had the ’ plate swap ’ a few timeseconds.
Cheers, Allan

Hiya
Mrsteel thank you, I seem to remember counting about 20 motors,
this seemed a lot of spares and pound notes doing nothing.
Do you recall the first Volvo used by Raymonds, iirc, they had a demostrater which I think was a F86 it was blue and white and came of the stand at the motor show at Earls Court I think maybe one or two other operators.
Raymonds only had it a couple of days before it was written off when a train ran over it in Whiteheads premises Newport. I am not sure but it might have been driven by Gwyn Edmunds, all I ever seen of it was a crumpled rear mudgaurd and mudflap that hung around the workshop at Raymonds.
Cloth cap,
Morning Bob,
I do remember going to Earls Court with the late Sid Evans. At that time I was shunting in the Abbey with JR. I don’t remember the Volvo though. At the show JR had a M&G. coil carrier there. After getting home from the show i went to work one night, Sunday night sticks in my mind for some reason but it may have not been.
The trl: from Earls Court was on the park so I weighed it in and put it the bay load.
When I opened the well up there was lots of stuff from Earls Court there.
Lots of booze and literature and a working model of a fifth wheel which I thought I would keep. That didn’t happen, can’t remember what exactly did but it all went back to Bridgend.
Regards, Allan.

Looks fantastic Andrew, hope your keeping well mate.
pete 359:
this one looks fully freighted with alloy frag.
Wow, not sure when that picture was taken, but I do know that we were using those trailers in the early 90’s…
Fold the sides down to load tin plate in Trostre or Ebbw Vale, run to Upton (Poole) or Southall, tip and put the sides back up, then swap for the trailer loaded with scrap, back to Llanelli to tip, and reload Trostre or Ebbw Vale. Start of each journey, get underneath to adjust the brakes…
Once came back from Southall with only two drum brakes left, the other two had disintegrated along the M4 somewhere.
I started in 1993 with Andrew when that side of the business was David Thomas and Son. My first truck was the Ford Cargo day cab with top sleeper… cant find a picture of it, started out with it running open top 20’ containers to Onllwyn, Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen and a place near Kidwelly.
Happy days…
