South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Scania 81,
Good afternoon ,
Sorry to hear about Steve, he was a bit of a character as a young man as were Alan’s other drivers.
As you mention fruiterers in Bridgend I have a photo taken in the old foundry yard up the lane from the Coity Castle pub behind the station. The photo is of my father with a Scammell R8 that he drove for P&P Tpt.
It is loaded with fruit from Covent Garden. Apparently fruiterers from the town would bring up carts and take their order off the wagon, Spraggs could have been one. I think the photo dates from about 48/49.
If you have any info on the funeral could you let me know.
Regards, Allan

Long wheel base BEVER odd for BRS :open_mouth:

A firm I drove for in late 60s bought a second hand Leyland unit, It was a long wheel base and as far as can remember it was used on car transporter work so perhaps thats why they were that length, Regards Larry.

The guy I remember on the fuel island was known as the ’ old gent ’ I do remember Eric Williams and would I be correct in saying that his father also worked there, it was a long time ago but some thing has brought that memory back . My father was known as Curly Bill as there was Bill James, Big Bill James, and Bill Beechy iirc. Great memories.

If I remember correctly the old gent’s name was Harold Cullen, he used to live on the road from Heol y Cyw to Coity over the common. my father worked for the BRS from about 1952 to 1964, his name was Jack Hill (Fangio was his nickname).

Cloth cap,
Good morning , I drove for John Raymond in the seventies and remember Jack in the garage.
I remember that if he wanted to explain a job he’d just done he would wet his finger and draw a diagram on the rear mudguard of the tractor. Funny the the things you remember as time goes on.
Regards, Allan

Clothcap I recollect Harold Cullen when I started their in1969 he used to walk around wearing a brown woolen Russian type hat regards your father Jack Hill did is son work in Raymond’s garage is that you or am I wrong some years ago I might be wrong your dad was well known

Yes I did work for Raymonds in the garage, I worked as a junior fngineer for the BRS in ferry road cardiff, and on weekends I use to work for Raymonds. I finished with the BRS the end of 1970 and spent a few months working for Lyn Howells, before working full time for Raymonds.

In 1974 I worked for th NCB in Tondu. The last 20 years of my working life I worked for VI, VOSA or DVSA as it is now.

Unfortunatly my father passed away about 25 years ago, I have a lot to thank him for when it comes what I achieved during my working life.

Regards Bob.

Good morning Allen

Yes you are right we did have a chat at John Raymond’s funeral. I decided to sign up to the group because I believed I new the name of the old gent who worked the fuel island, in later years my uncle, Horace ■■■■■ worked at Bridgend BRS as yardman/fuel island attendant.

Good old days.

Regards Bob
