Hi all,
Some classic Welsh BRS here. First image is Swansea depot, second is I think? Rhymney hill, leaving Cardiff ? Third could be a LDOY event at St. Athan? Has to be a Peter Davies photo of a load of flat steel.I’ve got the final shot down as an AEC Mercury?

Evening Al,
Thank you. I’m guessing that Rhymney hill was the main route into and out of Cardiff,In the days before Gabalfa and the A48 dual carriageway to Tredegar park and years later the M4. Today has been a very good day,Thanks to my lifelong friend Shaun Swain my Magnum now has functioning electronically controlled air suspension.Still work in progress,Though moving forward.
Regards Andrew.

Morning Coop,
That was the way east back then and was always very busy. So the man from Llandyssul is still on the case then, he’s the one to sort it i reckon.
Cheers, Allan

Hi Lance,
Yes m8,I did notice that. There’s a lot for sale at the minute. The legislation DVLA have been threatening American truck owners with in the U.K. Is due to be implemented this autumn,Afaiaa it’s potentially game changing and will make these vehicles very costly to meet MOT and Type Approval. If the full proposed draft is written into law? Then it will effectively make trucks built in USA,Nothing more than a garden ornament in our country.
Regards Andrew.

I’m certain that the steel banding used on that S’Wales Octopus load would have been manufactured at Barrow Steel and when I was at Bradys on the Octopus and trailer our first load more or less every week was a 22ton load of strapping down into S.Wales which was many miles of the stuff and I think it was the Signode system that was used . The Abbey was the main consumer but we delivered smaller tonnages to other works at times. Cheers Bewick.

Bewick,
Good evening, re: the photo of the B.R.S. Octopus with the load of banded sheet steel it was the Signode system that was used to clip the bands in place.
I went into the Abbey first of all as an eighteen year old on a four wheeler in 1965 .
Once you were loaded you would take enough precut bands from a pile on the floor and place them where they needed to be . Then you had to look for the banders to come and tighten them using Signode clips.
Back then the working practices had to be seen to be believed. Apparently fifteen thousand people were employed there but a lot of them didn’t do much work. Eventually all steel out of the Abbey was in coil form.
Most of my forty seven years driving was ’ on the steel ’ untill I retired in 2011.
Cheers, Allan

Regarding Signodes & the steel banding - I remember delivering steel to Signodes at Fforestfach, Swansea with my Dad sometime in the early 70’s.
At the time, my Dad worked mostly out of Llanwern, and on this occasion I think he had delivered to Ford’s at Dagenham- but I can’t be sure of that.

I do remember calling in at an office on East India Dock Rd though for a back load - I know he used to use Silver Roadways occasionally- so maybe it was them??

Anyway, it was straight round to River Rd, Barking - to load for Signode, with what must have been imported steel I guess- which got us pointing back towards home.

The steel banding on loads of sheet was a bit crude - right around the underside of the chassis on most trailers, though I recall one of his ‘Fleet’ trailers - built in Hereford by Praills, had little slots cut into the chock rail at regular intervals, so the bands went over , through the rail, then under the load- which was better I thought.

Cheers all,

Keith

K.Mills,
Hi, back in the day Duramin trls: also had slots put in the chock rail.
Later on some local hauliers would modify their trls: by cutting a piece out of the chock rail and then welding a piece of round bar over it. Later still trls: were supplied ready fitted.
Cheers
