South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Paul John,

Congratulations and Best wishes for the wedding. :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

I’ll kick this off …….Stereophonics ■■ Member unsure   , but for the RECORD  Not Me ! :sunglasses: (ALTHOUGH I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH A GROUP…Bassetts Motor Group of South Wales for 18 yrs as their Dealer Principal / General Manager prior to my Retirement at the Grand old age of 62 Last June  and i don’t think it will be the Adopted Welsh Member (Dennis Bach Bewick) either as i’m reliably informed that the only 2 bit’s of singing he has ever done was Dellilah in the shower (now banned :unamused: ) and good vibes in his Atki “OJM” as he masterfully took her through the 20 fuller / eaton ratios
E.W.

Have a superb day Paul & Mrs John

Hi EW. Thanks for the best wishes.
No it isn’t the Stereophonics, but one band member lived and retired in the Orlando area.
Another clue!

Badfinger.

Hi Neil. You are right with the group, the Ivey’s/Badfinger. Originally 4 Swansea boys, then two Swansea boys and two Liverpudlians.
Neil, I believe you know the member on here who is the connection.
How about the band member as well!

Hi all. Come on, tomorrows the day, the deadline. You will be surprised at the answer as many of you know the member I’m talking about.
The band members relationship a little harder.
If we achieve these answers, then it will be the song!
I’m fairly sure mechanic 77 has all the answers but is holding back!
Think!!

As I’ll be busy most of today, it’s time to reveal all.
The member is Swanseas own Dai Bootsy.
Dai’s sister was married to Ivey’s/Badfinger drummer Mike Gibbins.
Mike past away in 2005, but the family music carries on with 3 sons playing under the name of Seven Sisters, here in Oviedo Fl.
The Badfinger story is quite sad, but their talent and music superb.

Has anyone heard off Dai bootsy. He was a regular here before his eye illness restricted his correspondence.
If you learn about this post Dai, I hope it brightens your day.

Lastly, does anyone want to guess the song!
There’s a Bonnie Tyler song amongst the selected music, finishing up with Tom Jones.
A little slice of Wales.
Paul

Congratulations, I’ll guess the song as No matter what.

Nice guess Neil. Its, Day after Day.
Thanks for the congratulations.
If it’s been a long time since anyone listened to Badfinger I strongly suggest you check them out on You -Tube. Such raw, natural talent.

Paul John
Hi, re: Badfinger, back in the seventies when I worked for John Raymond we were on contract to Rees & Kirkby aka Rees & Girders in Morriston. They had a place in Clydach ( Glan yr Avon works ) where they shot blasted and painted steelwork. The foreman there known as Ginger had a son who played in the band but I don’t remember his surname. I do remember though that he was very proud of him.
Some usless info for you from good times gone by.
Best wishes for the wedding.
Regards Allan

Aimed at Andrew Cooper pete359 (& the late Dave the Renegade r.i.p.)

Been feeling under the weather here last couple of weeks, so in order to cheer me up i decided to go back to the begining of this great thread started by the late Dave the Renegade back in 2009 ! i accidentally came across this site in June 2010 and joined up. What a fantastic achievment to have reached 761 pages to date , and trawling through them all last 2 weeks has been an absolute tonic.

The pictures information and knowledge of everyone on here including that of our member on here from the outer fringes of Wales Dennis ( Bewick of Kendal) adopted by our great nation due to his frequent visits to the Abbey during the 60’s  is nothing short of amazing , and seeing loads of pictures of hauliers gone by in my neck of the woods near Carmarthen West Wales has brought back fabulous memories for me.

So now i am back on page 761 again , and looking forward to the continuation pages of this great thread .

Andrew, you have done a fab job of this thread since you were handed the keys , and i’m certain that Dave looks down with great pride on all your efforts.

Let’s keep it going lads.

E.W.

Hi E.W.
Thanks so much for the kind words.Dave was a great guy and despite his mobility issues,Became a real show regular. It’s wonderful to see his (our) thread continue.Hope your feeling better E.W.

Thank you Andrew were on earth did you dig that photo of me after the L.D.O.Y in 1976 it gave me a shock to see hair on my head long gone now, you are right still living in Forfar sadly my wife Patricia who I met at B.R.S. Bridgend passed away last October missing her greatly, thanks for making me laugh at that photo Andrew the wealth of knowledge you bring to this site is amazing bringing back lots of memory’s to us old timers all the best Alan

Regards Andrew.

Hi Paul,
Heartfelt congratulations to you both.Steve, thank you for posting that picture,Those models are terrific. Finally a photo I found of STG 10Y,Joints first new Merc 1633,Really was some machine near 40 years ago.New to Billy “The cap” Hathaway,Seen here though (note the red disc behind Merc 3 pointed star)when driven by Allan Evans, aka Mr Steel.

Hi all,
I think this is a Will Hall of Heol Y Cyw, Atki? Mr Steel will know for sure.Very similar look to John Raymond from that era……

Hi all,
Another stunning picture by Gary Brookfield……

Evening Coop,
Just looking at the Will Hall Atki, tried to make out the name on the door but failed. Iirc his motors didn’t have a white roof but could be wrong. Thought it might have been one of JR’s but the roping and sheeting would have been up a notch or two. I think I’ll give Dai Cap a bell, he would probably know.
Allan

Hi all,
A few Caerphilly boys heading out on the Middle East, maybe? Also,It’s hard to Imagine Orb Works was ever once there now………
