South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

A sad site to see the poor old Sed Atki 400 Scrapped…Not many left… :frowning:

[quote="pete 359Didn’t walls buy glovers and that then morphed into Celtic  I am sure as this threads recovery guru, that you would know

Andrew,
Glovers [Ipswitch rd, Cardiff merged with DA Dyers [Tremorfa, Cardiff] over 10 years ago to form Celtic recovery which Walls took over around 5 years later. Its still based at Glovers old place. That Daf was based in the Avonmouth depot. There was a longer Daf for a while that Walls engineered in their own workshops with a Maggie D 6x4 back end, that got sold on.
Neil.

This walls fh amazed me when I first saw it, when new in truckfest south west in 2006.she’s pulling a bit of weight in this shot :sunglasses: .What’s the driver doing with his left hand   .

Maybe he’s nervously biting his finger nails as he glances in the mirror at the lump hes got on the bar behind him.

Hi all. Andrew and Neil great pic’s and content.
There is always something special about seeing a heavy haul tractor and its load on a low loader/special trailer.
The same can be said when you see a wrecker in action, although preferably doing a breakdown recovery, as opposed to accident recovery.
Today’s wreckers are expensive pieces of equipment, and no doubt in the right hands great tools.

Obviously, the days of my cousin and I towing a TK Bedford on the bar up through the Rhymney Valley, trying to scare the ■■■■ out of each other are long gone. I guess stopping for a few pints or at the chippy is no longer allowed either!.

The only proper wrecker I worked on was a 6x4 Albion purpose built for the Tayside Regional Council Transport Department in Dundee.
It was set up to be driven on a PSV license as opposed to a HGV. I was the second man as I didn’t have either license at the time.
Towing in Daimler and Volvo double deckers was a blast, it seemed as if everyone stopped to look, a big yellow wrecker, beacons flashing and two clowns in the cab wearing old bus men oversize hats/caps, and even bigger smiles lol.

Thanks for bringing back such great memories.

Paul.

Hello Harry,

hiya,
If I got a leg up into the shed i might just be OK in a straight line but I
doubt if I could pull that steering about in a tight spot, now the AEC is
a different kettle of fish they all had what we referred to as trailer gear
steering quite light without power assistance something to do with the
gearing in the steering box, but everybody knows that, don’t they ■■.
thanks harry, long retired.

A few of us are planning on taking the trucks to the steam rally and classic vehicle show at Castle Coombe circuit near Bath on 19/20 May.
If anyone wants to join in and bring their old truck let me know and I’ll sort out entry forms.
Neil.
