Hi Neil,
Those photos amaze me,the last time I was in Llanwern was 1998 and in 14 years a lot has changed there.it can only be a matter of time now,I believe the zodiac line that the then British steel invested millions in during the late 80’s to secure the Toyota orders has so far saved llanwern from the axe.the place is a ghost town compared to the days when r.g. Miles and dozens of other firms both large and small ran in and out 24/7.

Andrew,
I remember that Miles Transcon being a regular sight parked there at Raglan.
Neil.

Hi, Andrew and Neil, those photo’s of Llanwern are unreal. Its a long time since I was there, coal, stone dust and all kinds of product coming in one end and Steel going out the other. Unbelievable really, and no doubt the Abbey has scaled back production as well.
Neil’s photo shows Keedwell with a fair size fleet in Newport, Owen’s and John Raymond seem to have big fleets as well. What are they all carrying, there seems little made in S. Wales these days?

Have a great day off, as its Easter Monday. Not celebrated here.

Regards to all Paul.

Hello Paul,
didn’t realise about no easter holidays over there I suppose they have a differant religous make up and history [not going back as far as Pagans either] Christmas is less days off too isn’t it?

Llanwern, like many of the other old industrial landmarks around South Wales is starting to look very differant. You’d be surprised at the places that now have houses on them.

Back to the trucks, as you say some big fleets still operating, who knows exactly what they are exporting from the area though, its all hidden behind the trailer cutains. It does seem easier to think of the factories that have gone rather than the ones that are still going.
Neil.

hi neil,
i think? the transcon.was owned by a subbie?though it wouldn’t be the first time i have got it wrong  did you go to coleford mate

Andrew,
me and my dad went to Coleford in the car this morning, the rain had spoilt the event. Noticably down on stalls, vehicles and public on previous [dry and sunny] years. Pity.

A couple of familier faces had braved the weather though…

Here’s one for dai echo and rowly :sunglasses:

hello Neil , Andrew
Yes lots of changes at Llanwern over the years (I in my 29th year there now) The houses in neils photos are the 1st phase and the road through the site ‘Queens way’ will eventually be open to the public allowing a route from the m4 at magor to the SDR. The old heavy end of the works is being cleared for development and sees a lot of container movements with raw materials that have been recovered , all destined for abroad I think. We still get plenty of lorry movements but as you said nowhere near as the 80s and 90s. The transcont I think originally belonged to Ford Newholland and I am sure was run by a subbie when with miles I used to see it loading finished coil in the cold mill.
regards
Tony

Whats the story with that F88 Andrew? The Merc seems to date the picture 1990’s on.
Neil.

Any of you who were regular visitors to Llanwern steelworks may be interested in these pictures I took today from the Newport entrance.

In my younger days  I delivered milk round Newport for my uncle who had a dairy farm at Saltmarsh lane Goldcliff, I remember the "Spencer works " as it was then, well recently I went to visit my cousin at Whitson, what a job I had finding that, didn’t recognise half of it till I got to Pye corner by Hazell’s old place. Things have certainly altered a lot round there !

Hi Neil,
I was hoping you local lads could jog my memory  I cannot remember where I took it,it maybe amongst a load I have been given  I remember mike tomms from church village with a maroon f88,this one is from the late 80’s or even early 90’s,maybe dai or rowly can help.maybe? pERFection14 will now something.probably an owner driver and mate started up in partnership, unusual that neither of the names ring any bells though
Regards Andrew.

the Jenkins & Prosser f88 was a small company formed after Henry Jenkins of Beddau closed I think the Jenkins name on the Volvo was a relation to Henry Jenkins

Well done Kelvin, bang on cue. The beauty of Trucknet.
Neil.

Are there still two weighbridges at Llanwern? There was a double one at Magor end and a double at the other where you came off the A449 into the works. I remember that shunters got priority at the Magor end bridge and there were one or two heated arguments, especially when Edwards shunters came to weigh, other drivers not realising they were shunting and nipping onto the bridge.

hi all,
a big thank you to local farmer and haulier geoff evans for sharing these pictures with us.firstly a chris morgan daf on geoff’s driveway in pencoed
