Hi Andrew

Is that Bob’s own truck or does he drive for Mike Barnsley? Only being nosey cos I heard sometime ago that Mike was trying the OD route…

I did my Young HGV drivers course with Mike’s son, Simon, back in the early eighties. Really nice chap. They also had a cracking fleet of mostly Gardner powered Sed Atki’s at the time - a couple of eight-leggers and the rest were artics. They had just bought a 401 eight wheeler on a ‘Y’ plate… I guess they must have had about a dozen or so at the time with a couple of old Atki’s still hanging in there…

As you say, they still have a smart fleet. Its nice to see a proper livery too…makes a change from varying shades of white…

hi piston broke,
bob was driving the barnsley fh for i think two weeks, whilst the regular driver was on holiday.the firm still run around a dozen trucks and as many subbies.i have a photo of one of their old atki.8 wheelers.you are right about the livery, the white you see most vehicles in these days makes them almost anonymous.barnsley’s well applied colours are smart and very distinctive, they are a regular sight on the roads of south wales,i think it’s good to see a proper well liviried firm still with us.here’s a welsh based man for my mate john (altitude).

hi graham,
his knowledge of the south wales haulage industry has amazed me over the years and a great guy :sunglasses: .so here is a little easter quiz question for everyone, this albion photo was given to me years ago by another mate called bob who also writes in truck magazines.the question is,what is the welsh connection with davis bros.a huge london based company in their day?i wonder if member beaver680 or bookworm can tell us?

Hi, Porthcawl is listed as a depot on the cab front panel, Davis Bros had depots in most industrial areas and no doubt would be trying to muscle in on reasonable decent rated traffic from South Wales consequently driving rates down as was usual in those days.
Cheers , Leyland 600.

hi leyland600,
full marks sir :sunglasses: .i have asked many locals over the years, where the davis bros. porthcawl yard/office was? it seems that nobody can tell me.my guess would be the old aerodrome at stormy down?LYNXMAN,beaver680,bookworm where are you all?i bet you all would know
regards andrew.

Hello Andrew
Yes you are quite right, Davis Bros was based at Stormy Down. I dont know which of the hangars was theirs but I suspect it was where Roach`s and then Vale Transport had later which as you know was alongside J & M.
When we (Glyn Morgan) moved up there in about 1966 they had gone.

hi andrew
mike is right davis bros depot was at stormy they also ran another outfit from there called charles poulter mostly four wheelers cream and brown in colour,a friend from my tramping days at bridgend brs percy bailey deceased drove for davis in the 50’s he had some story’s about them.
, regards tony
