South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Paul John:
Hi all, Scania81, when you say Davies street are we talking opposite the jail? The road leading to Davies Street took you over the bridge that the main London to Cardiff railway ran into and out of the General/Central station? First left after the bridge Sanquahar St, then the roundabout to the docks East Tyndall St, passing Euro Commercials. If so Davies St was a short cut (walking) into the city centre from Splott/Adamsdown. Never took any notice of the name, but new BRS were based there.

Paul

Spot on with your accurate description of Davis Street Paul John.
The general fleet went there after Ferry Road and it was a parcel depot.
Half was sold for housing about 95 and in the early 2004 ish the yard shut.
Ran out of there on Rest Assured contract for 6 months and pickfords had a small office along with truck rental and brs driver agency.

Hi Dai,
I remember breaking down on the A48 between Newport and Cardiff…we were members of BRS Rescue at that time…and towed to Davis Street…I remember that was one busy place…the work shop was flat out there as you say all the regular BRS Conected vehicles British Rail…Pickfords and so on.

Hi all,
SBF10.Thanks for the kind words about our thread reaching 700 pages.Smallcoal,I always remember seeing a W.Jones Bedford TK removal lorry parked every weekend on South Road in Nottage when I was a kid.Im guessing the driver was from Porthcawl? Here for member Scania81 and everyone else,Firstly a Bryndon Evans photo of his late father driving a brand new very early model ergomatic two pedal BRS Beaver in Gorseinon carnival in 1966 and a pair of Swansea “WN” registered BRS motors decked at High Wycombe depot…

Hi all, Dai (Scania81) I do remember the BRS Rental operation, and as you say Pickford’s and many other vehicles in different company liveries. I vaguely remember cross hiring a long bed, flatbed cargo to BRS Rental normally used by the scaffolding outfits. We are talking 1990/91, and having Allan our fitter at Gulliver’s give me a lift home after work and I walked over from Sanquahar St in the morning and picked it up. As you say over the years they built all around the yard, even in the early 90s it must of been a pain trying to get an operators license out of there. Probably had some grandfather rights back then.
Iirc BRS Rental Bristol was close to Gulliver’s in Bedminster!

Andrew, well done on reaching 700 pages. Dave the Renegade is looking down at you smiling, well done mate.
Just got my January T&D, I thought the article on the Griffiths family/Smiths Heavy Haulage was good. It surely is an impressive fleet.
For some reason, Bridgend as always been home to heavy haulage outfits, Tony Morgan/Specialist Services in the 80s high profile for sure. Tony bought his Scania’s from Telford Motors, which is now owned by Keltruck! When W.T. Davies owned Telford they had an F reg 6x4 top of the range Scania which looked superb. Graham may well know more about the spec.

Got a picture of the offices and will get it up when i get home.
They had a Avana bakery contract and Aluk.Alexon ,pirelli tyres, metpost.
First time i went in there on a rainy january evening and backed a trailer in the only available space to be told it was dedicated to ALUK motors.
Great after about 5 drivers watching me in the dark shunting.
The bedminster depot was in Spring Street by gulliver,s.

Hi Smallcoal,
I would say all through the 1970’s as I remember playing in the 40 acre park as a kid and the Bedford TK was parked opposite there every weekend,I’m pretty sure it was there up until the early to mid 1980’s? This Constructor was part of the Peter Hiscocks fleet from Cowbridge,There is a huge housing project being built now right by where that fleet was once based. Thanks for the kind words about our thread,Dave was the man that started it all off initially,we collectively have just kept it going.R.I.P. Dave mate…,

Any idea what make that trailer is? Interesting swan neck on it…

Cheers, Patrick

Good morning Patrick,
Thanks for the comments.Tbh,i wouldnt know for sure 100%.Though imo that WYNNS trailer could well be a French built Nicolas? A very popular emerging brand back then.I think they were bought out by one of the other big trailer manufacturers?
regards Andrew.

'Morning Andrew,

Well, the back end looks like Goldhofer or Scheuerle and the neck could be a Nicolas product, that’s why I’m a bit puzzled by it, I’ve only seen such a neck before on a trailer of Heanor’s before, and that was a in-house product so to speak…

Nicolas became part of a group with Scheuerle and Kamag but stayed “independent”, however as of next month they’ll be going into administration sadly enough…

Cheers, Patrick

Hiya,
love the livery on the Abertawe Transport Sed Atki very similar to a pal
of mine who was in business up here in the North East of England for a
lot of years Larry Dunbar, the red and that shade of green look great.

It would have been Dave (The Renegade’s) birthday today, I will raise a glass to him this evening.

Pete.
