Quite right “H” your the “salt of the Earth” and one of the Old school ! Maybe a spot of training on the “wash” would put the final touches to what would then be a shining example of what a proper Driver was like in yesteryear !  :open_mouth: Cheers Dennis.

Hi there,

Hope you don’t mind me posting here but this thread has brought back many memories of my childhood.

My dad ran a Cardiff based HGV driving school in Mortimor Road in the 70’s and 80’s and many of the names i see on here I recognise from the dim and distant past.

He used class 1 Bedford TK’s and KM’s and class 3 TK’s that were ex Bulmers cider trucks and for many years i spent time lying across the shelf at the rear of the cab whilst his pupils drove around the area and to and from llantrisant test centre.

Great to see some of the old trucks pics too.

By the way, my Mum Barbara was the first woman in Wales and possibly the UK to pass her HGV class 1 back in 1973. She passed in a KM with splitter box and no power steering and was 5 feet 4 inches tall. Will have to see if I can dig out the pics - she made the news! My dad never let anyone drive back from the test centre whether they passed or failed. If they passed all was well but if they had failed, to be driven back by my mum ALWAYS ensured they passed on the re-test!

Would be lovely to hear from anyone who remembers him. He sadly passed away back in 1995 but he loved teaching and had many stories to tell!

Cheers

Julian Abel

Thanks for your reply Mr Ward. My dad Brian loved to teach HGV and was gutted when he had to leave Mortimor Road because it was being torn down for new flats. I spent many happy hours in the yard and workshop and upstairs in the office area. There were many hundreds if not thousands of pupils he taught during the 70’s and 80’s and he always spoke fondly of those who wanted to pass their HGV’s.

I would have been 11 in '76 so it’s possible our paths crossed back then!

Kindest regards to you.

Julian

Ha ha,

Nowt wrong with a pint or two!

Was the cafe on the bypass near the bridge. He used to spend loads of time at Llandow and I think he had a set up like that at Llantrisant for the maneuvering test.

I remember one day one of the trucks threw a con-rod out near Rhoose airport and I was charged with having to be towed back complete with trailer. I could have only been 17 or so but he took the view that all would be ok because even though I was not 21 the law stated that the vehicle had to be operating and since the engine was goosed and being towed it was not operating! Couldn’t get away with it today.

Glad your still trucking around the area. I moved up North many years ago but still get home as often as I can.

Hi all,
Thanks to everyone who was able to support the brilliant 2016 porthcawl truck gathering.with just over £3,000 raised for the RNLI,the organisers really did work hard to create an excellent family show.i would especially like to thank the three good friends of mine who had brought their trucks hundreds of miles to attend.
