I have this photo in the attic somewhere, remember as a young cab rat learning about life in 1 of these.
Having a dressing down for putting my feet on the dashboard,my late father always kept is motors very clean.
I can see drivers like Eric everitt and Cliff Warren pulling into waterton road with this type of load.Margam had its own sub depot
to Bridgend at 1 time.Climbing membury bank sluggish at 2am ish in the morning and over the top like a run away train with scrap from deptford.

Hi Scania 81 Margam depot ran a fleet of AEC mercury,s with Tasker 28 ft trailers painted yellow I remember them well . Cheers Ianto.

Evening Ianto,i hope our mate Mr Rooker is ok out in Turkey.
Jeff Jenkins ended up in the mill, wasn,t he in traffic down there?
He always stood out in the bus stop underneath the m4 from Aberkenfig dressed like the equaliser expecting a lift to Bridgend.
Trevor Owen didn,t stop in the rain 1 morning and a few noises were made,i thought it was very funny.
I Know Graham John and my dad were down there on nights for a while.[Abbey works Margam].

Hello dai and ianto. been keeping well in turkey weather been very hot for a good few weeks but times are a changing moving to Scotland by the end of the week so I will be getting rid of my summer gear looking forward to some proper beer ■■■■■■ off with the effes beer over here, all the best to you both Alan.

Hi ianto, noticed that seddon was code no CG,i know in very old depot codes Cardiff was IG.Later becoming RS in modern numbers.
Wondered if CG was Bridgend in old numbers.[Later SK and then RX].The reg rings a bell and the driver looks very like my late father.
I cannot find my old depot code book any where. He broke is nose as a child on a bus trip and very rarely allowed me to go on a trip
with school.Ironic that going down the birdlip with a load of rebar with Eddie Thomas behind the wheel was ok though.
After he retired 1 of the modern drivers was in the office boasting about Wrexham was achieved in 3hrs 45mins,only to be shot down with Eddies dry sense of humour to say it was not that fast 3hrs 15 to 3hrs 25 was is average.[he had called in for a tea]
A little longer for a while after Cyrille Richards hit the arch bridge at the Symonds Yat,the road was shut for ages, with all mid wales traffic having to push up to the first roundabout at Ross for the A49.Old hands would remember turning left at the little chef and the climb towards Owens Cross,if driving a high sider you had to negotiate the middle of the road and was a little tight if the steel boys were flying down from Shotton .

Hello H,
I think your right mate, they had lots of traders and bmc/leylands.a huge player.even mentioned in the lyrics of a max Boyce poem!

The newer (micky mouse model) Glyn S John Foden eight wheeler was when new driven by, if I remember correctly “Alfie” , a bigish guy who always looked very smart. The Foden had a 220 ■■■■■■■ and was fitted with a Jake Brake. It operated out of the depot under the viaduct in Taffs Well, mainly transporting Cable from Aberdare Cables to Electricity Board Depots all over the UK. The depot transport manager at the time was another bigish guy " Neville", the company was owned by (So I was led to believe) Lord Aberdare who also owned Aberdare Cables and South Waler Switchgear , I don’t think P Leiner in Treforest had any say in the company other than they had a dedicated fleet of Ford D’ Glyn S John vehicles based in Treforest servicing their Gelatine Factory
I worked for the following transport companies during the 60’s & 70’s :
R F Turner- Dinas Powys
Bowles -Llandough
Ross Garages - Penarth Road , Cardiff x2
E. Boyle -Penarth Road, Cardiff
Glyn S John - Taffs Well ,Nr. Cardiff
Valley Carriers - Sully, Barry x2
Smith of Maddison -Newport
Welsh International - Penarth Road , Cardiff

Wish I had some picture to share , but alas I have only fading memmories.

thanks for that roybach, don’t know if youre on facebook but I’ve got a Glyn John Transport page on there, loads of photos and owd boyos on there, cheers
