Bridgend based marathon RXG264, could be a back load from enfield to copperworks road llanelli.
I believe Owens and Wynford North done the work last going off before it shut.
hi,
thanks for that information.you have just confirmed, precisley what i suspected.i thought the marathon was a bridgend based motor.
regards andrew.
Your welcome,Percy Bailey drove it and the menace.
When not on day tramp it was on the Wrexham night changeover driven by Eddie Thomas.
Later on the disguised roadtrain arrived as a marathon RXG 325 [XEU 632T] Brand new to malcolm hall.

Eddie Thomas lived in North Cornelly,[originally from cymmer]years ago drove buses for the N and C .
He then drove for the old Dai David then done 28 years service with the Brs Bridgend.[sadly passed on]
Last of the old crew in porthcawl is Arthur Stephens who would be in his 80,s now.
When Rockwool first opened the marathon took out 1 of the first loads as the day cab Erf,s were still being delivered.
About 2 years later had jennings sleepers added that always leaked.
Not to be a anarok but on page 187 there is a picture of a 81 with basildon ford tractors on board destined for the B and I ferry
Pembroke Dock. It is a carmarthen based motor. Bridgend had only 1 scania 81 on W plate[JDW 296W] RXG352.

Morning pete 359,i am up in inverness working a lot and the father of my colleague transfered there from calor or redundancy in the 70,s.
I do have loads of photos mostly brs,but have no scanner, bristols seddons and scanias and the daf 2200.[bedford tm,s] were on driver training.f86,s came back into fleet from harris economy bridgend. The rigid was converted back to artic put in british tissues colours.
Question for you if you could answer please,Noel ricketts of corntown i think were bought out by Nationwide transport,Was there a connection with Nationwide and Cardiff transport?
I know terry hughes [john raymond long server worked for ricketts and oscar and Raymond Thomas who worked 22 and half years for brs before sadly passing away.Ricketts were primed to be a massive company but his wife called majorie passed on and it seemed to just disappear.

That was the tie up with the Man,s then.I have the above photo Thu 97S the only 81 to arrive that year new to Arthur Stephens on days and Johnny Harding on nights[44 year service man].3 111 Scania,s were added too,Thu 94S new to Ron Perkins and Roy Griffiths,Thu 95S was sent to outbased drivers Ray King and Barry Evans at Burton On Trent with most back loads of Buxton brick for the Abbey works.Thu 96S was new to Victor the pole and Mervyn Bator.Back in the early 80,s i rode back from Alyesbury with Billy Best Bitter and Ray Thomas,Bill needed a lift home and Ray drove the Crusader back on nights,i still laugh when i have a memory jog.Bill was suited up and not wearing is legendary spitfire jacket,on to the M4 middle of summer on a early saturday morning gliding past the caravaners.

Morning Ianto,i was not driving at the time but was a lorry mad kid from 5 years of age, spent weekends, school holidays and even friday nights away after school.Although i eventually drove just under 12 years for them mostly on rockwool.Remember the bollocking my dad would have off Ross Morgans the night office foreman for carrying me as a passenger only to repeat the process the following night.I remember tommy roberts on distribution.
Mid 70,s when the First 111,s arrived i would be in london all week,Ray Thomas and Donald Dennis[shaker]would do the night trunking to Bridgend back to London and shunted by Tony Petit and Dai Page,Ltc 427P ,Ltc 428P .The latter truck came to grief 2 Years later when a tipper hit it on the old m4 near Chepstow. It was driven at the time by Bill beechy a real proper gentleman who escaped unharmed, the photo was posted on earlier pages.
1 photo i regret not having snapped was the 2 Leyland Buffalo,s Peu 712R and Peu 713R,I remember them arriving with pet regs exhaust under bumper etc.
New to Ray Thomas and Nutty the shop steward and the other 1 went to the surfer on tramp. They were not there long 1 went to newport depot.
The 81,s arrived then.1 was used on the Brentford changeover,If you were not in and out by midnight the place was dedicated to the grimsby fish contract with all them Bmc.s buzzing around.Another great name of british industry gone.
You would know John ellis then?Is 1st truck was Mtc 479R 111 scania.
Regards David

I have a photo of XEU 632T marathon [RXG325] with a high wind slammer on roof for better fuel economy.
It had certain Leyland Roadtrain parts on it.Given to the heavy footed Malcom Hall [olly].
I kid you not he booked it off for vibrations on dashboard and when the Leyland engineer came down for the test runs the Bridgend fitter Phil Edwards went on the cowbridge by pass with olly driving.Over the top of crack hill olly give it the gunnels and phil told me the rattling was due to,well i will just say driving out of the legal speed limit.[The trailer was fully loaded].
This guy in the medical so called white coat was bemused.[leyland engineer].
I remember your dad i believe he had a 82 brand new on Rockwool,if i am correct?
They looked the business at the time.
