South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Hi all,

Hi all,
This was kindly emailed to me yesterday by Mike tomms junior.mike senior is seen here in his f88,that according to the grille and front flap is a 290? Though the American stud pattern on the road wheel suggests a 240 to me??

Andrew, thanks for posting the above photo.
hello all,
I’ve been a reader of this forum for many years now, I noticed a posting on 22/11/15 that mentions my old man Mike Toms, he started out on his own in 1972 with a G reg F86 that he bought off Henry Jenkins of Beddau, the firm that he worked for at the time, and York coil carrier. He bought the L reg F88 that was mentioned in 1976. He use to haul out of the Abbey, Llanwern and Ebbw Vale, he also did a fair bit of tipper work in the 1970’s an early 80’s. I know lot of the drivers and hauliers that are mentioned in this forum were friends of his.
I’m guessing a lot of the members in this forum are drivers that use to haul out of the Abbey and have added some great photo’s of the past, I was wondering if any of you guys have come across any photos of his F88 or F10, I know this is a bit of a long shot, as he sold the F88 over 30 years ago, and the F10 about 25 years ago, but as a lot of the photos on this forum are in and around the Abbey and are from that era, I’m hoping someone might know of one. The only photo of the F88 that we have is an old Polaroid posted above, taken around January 1978 in Clive Morgan Commercials/South wales Trailers yard (the old drift yard) in Taff’s Well, it had not long had a new cab fitted at the time of the photo, as it had been in a tipping accident in Cardiff docks in November 1977.(that’s how it has a 290 cab when it was a 240)
Best regards to all the readers and members of this forum and keep on posting the great photos; hopefully someone might come across one of my old man.
Mike Toms

Hi Pete 359

Must be an ex Caddies refurb  as they all went in as 240s and came out as 290s :open_mouth:

Paul John:
Andrew tremendous photos once again. As I don’t have any myself, hopefuly you will not mind if I ask questions or comment on yours. Was W.J., W.G., and V.B. Davies related. I remember W.G. Davies’s crusaders and later sk Merc’s delivering coils into Reads/ Nancanco in Rhymney, from possibly Velindre?. From
Glyn Neath bank to Dowlais top 80% uphill and slow going. Didn’t V.B. Davies have a yard in the same village as Trevor C Phillips (maroon coloured motors)?.
Perhaps another member could help also, as I can’t seem to remember the village names, and new roads and by-pass’s have possibly been built so the yards are no longer in view.

Cheers Paul

Hi paul,i remember in the 70s driving for Harris & miners of Devon,on a 4wheeler Leyland comet,& my other mate driving a 4wheeler AEC,heading for Blue star cafe at Blyth,Worksop, for the nite on sun,we would stop at Michael Woods services first for lunch,& we would meet 2 regular drivers on WG Davis, morriston, as well,1 driving a ERF 240 gardner,& the other scammell crusaders, red & green Livery, same as our fleet,
Good old days
Norman croad,Torquay…

Andrew, that last 112 again, looking new outside their Caerphilly base.
Neil.

Bridgend based marathon RXG264, could be a back load from enfield to copperworks road llanelli.
I believe Owens and Wynford North done the work last going off before it shut.
