hi all,
i don’t think? i have ever heard of this company before, llanelly spelt the old way and an atki.8 legger on 40x8’s,class.
Great shot that Andrew,at that time in the mid/later 60’s when I was frequenting S.Wales on the Octopus it was crawling with old 8 wheelers identical to this one which were mainly doing local work between the various works,I suppose that at the introduction of the 1968 Transport act they would have all got swept away when the annual MOT test became compulsory.Great shot all the same mate as it brings back happy memories of the days I spent in your part of the world Cheers Dennis.

Aye Dennis yourright when you said the 1968 Transport Act would have seen these old 8 leggers off most of them had brakes on three axles in those days & IMO would have failed the required levels, Sad but very true, They were good old workhorses in their day, Regards Larry.

I have watched the progress of JNY484 ever since the late 1970s when she was dragged out of her resting place at Pontlliw by a good mate of mine who knows a thing or two about AECs. Several Rosser wagons were saved around this time, just before a rogue scrap dealer came in and gas-axed every last one. Long story. I discovered a 1935 AEC Mammoth Major there, with trees growing through the chassis frame, which turned out to be the very first production Mk.2 Mammoth Major, registered BYV561, and this is now fully restored and on the rally scene in the livery of its original owner Bowaters. Great to see JNY484, which was the last one they bought new, coming back to life. As I recall, she stayed on the road with Rosser until 1974 purely on local work.
I remember her in that condition and I think I took a similar picture although mine would have been in monochrome.
Donald Rosser told me they could never keep a windscreen in any lorry they parked there, as the sport of choice amongst the kids in Pontlliw was brick lobbing and it required constant practice. He and Albert were stitched up by a scrap dealer who agreed to buy several specific lorries and cut them up on the spot, but actually went through the entire stockpile of old AECs. Had we not been quick off the mark in alerting people to what was hidden in the trees a number of prize AECs might not be with us today. Dillwyn Garage was another eye-opener; dark, oily and stuffed to the rafters with AEC components. Donald knew where everything was. He was also the M.O.T. Tester, and when I used to take my car there for its annual test I’d wait in the office and let Albert regale me with tall stories from decades ago.

The power of the Forum ! Please pass on my thanks to Mr Dogwalker. This fills in a gap in my knowledge of the haulage firms of old in my little corner of Wales.

I remember seeing a lot of Atkinson L1586s like this in the Swansea area as a kid back in the '60s. There was a red one which used to call in to the Silver Roadways yard at Penllergaer so the driver could collect paperwork. My memory says the name on the cab side was Davies but equally it could have been this one. Then again there was a red one which used to park overnight in Killay near where I lived, but I cannot recall the name. Could well have been Killay Transport of course.
I used to have a copy of this actual picture (taken by Peter Davies by the way) and showed it to my Dad to see if he knew anything about W H Bowen. Sadly no recollection, which may mean he never got work from Silver Roadways.
Andrew what happened to greenings, they used to come into fishguard

Greenings - probably the original Swansea haulier, certainly going back to the dawn of self-propelled transport. Spending my formative years in Upper Killay I could not fail to notice Greening’s Garage at the top end of the village on the left hand side before you moved on to Fairwood Common. From the records I extracted from my time as an insurance broker the firm was Horatio Greening and Morgan George Greening trading as Greening & Sons, of 665/667 Gower Road, Upper Killay, Swansea. On 07 June 1983 the business became J K Davies trading as Fairwood Transport & Shipping. In theory they operated from Berllwyd Farm, Penclawdd, Swansea but in practice the operating centre seems to have been Unit 6, Old Mardy Works, Kingsbridge, Gorseinon - certainly it was by October 1986 when they were licensed for 6 lorries and 4 trailers. By 1991 the business was seemingly being run on a shoestring and folded shortly afterwards.
I do have a list of the wagons operated, starting with their Albion box van 832DTG, which I used to see practically every day passing through Killay. Send me a PM if you want to see a copy.
Hi A.Porter, Greening Transport dates way back to 1856, the first licence operator in swansea. I not so sure which year George Greening Died 82/83 at the time they were Hauling goods for Signode and were in a warehouse in Cwmdu ind est. when greenings finished, ian davies went on his own as I.D.Davies hauling for DULUX SHIPPING Swansea Docks. Kieth went on to become Fairwood Transport and based at the old mardy works Kingsbridge. I think i.d.davies is trading as j.d.davies and operating at T.R.PHILLIPS.
Here,s a photo of Greenings Sentinel.
