Certainly looks like an authentic “working lorry” restoration. The red is an awkward colour to match if you do not know what it is - the official name according to Albert Rosser was Panhard Red. He also told me that JNY484 was given a new cab at around 10 years old which may explain the rubber-mounted windscreens and side screens in the shot of it alongside their shiny AEC Mandator V8 PJU365G. When my mate first extracted JNY484 from the elephants’ graveyard which was Rosser’s second site in the village, he carried out some initial restoration work, principally getting the cab re-skinned and re-fitted with metal framed windscreens. It is wonderful to see how the present owners have stuck so faithfully to an authentic restoration brief. If you look at the chassis pictures, you will see how the tail end of the chassis behind the rearmost axle has been docked; this was done by Rossers in order that the lorry could fit the loading bay at one of the tinplate works; not sure which one, possibly DuPort.

Now IMO that driver knows how to load a mixed load off “The Garden” he probably has flowers or soft fruit under the sheet tucked up all nice and warm, reletively, so to speak !! I’d like to have seen Joints Marauders loading a coiler on “The Stones” ," Tatties in the Well Boyo everything else piled around and chained on"      Couldn’t resist   Cheers Dennis.

I thought that this was a Glyn John motor after they sold up, but I’ve just been informed that this company was bought by Glyn John and run in their own name. They used to run out of ebbw vale and apparently GJT owned a firm in Hereford ARS they also run in GJT’s colours but their name, info and photos please for me book

Stanley Hawkins’ AEC Mammoth Major with his son David at the wheel, in the quarry at Portland in 1988 for a Truck & Driver photo shoot. Peter Davies took the pictures and wrote the article. I was there as well and took a series of pictures for my own interest. I learned the gentle art of cog-swapping on this lorry; 1st is a crawler gear so start in 2nd, change up to 3rd then to 4th. Then reach across to the second gear lever and engage overdrive. Reverse the sequence and introduce some throttle to change down. No danger of ever breaking any speed limits as overdrive top gives you a flat-out top speed of 29mph. No.1 was (and still is) low geared for the haulage of huge blocks of Portland limestone around the UK.
