Hi Pete 359, Re your comment regarding crushed bones etc into Leiners at Treforest suddenly stirred a memory for me. Back in 1964/5 I backloaded a part load of drums of gelatine from a factory at Treforest to Bolton or Blackburn so long ago I forget exactly where to Would this be the same place you are writing about? I also loaded exhaust pipe tube behind the drums for a factory at Blackpool. Where would I have loaded the tubes and from whom.? I had a BMC Morris FHK 140 (horizontal engined) four wheeler.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

Hello leyland 600 .

The tubes may have been Helliwels at Aberdare.

Andrew.
Leiners main factorie,s were at Treforest estate, the gelatine was a by product of the bones.

Leiners also had a place at Rhydyfelin (the old tin works)where I think gjt moved to from Taffs Well.

Clive.

This is the gaff

Some good old photos there,my father worked for Leiners from 1940 -1968 (minus war duties)

Thanks for all the comments about Leiners lads I had completely forgotten about that trip to South Wales so long ago until I read your comments about bones etc. Yes I think the tubes came from Bosal now you mention it. My previous trip to S. Wales was on 2nd Jan 1963 in deep snow with numerous deliveries of paper bags to bakeries and bakers shop in almost every valley. Most of the premises were impossible to get near due to the deep snow and all parcels were carried to the shop. Very kind folks dishing out cups of tea pies and buns. An unforgettable trip for a young 22 year old driver.
Cheers Leyland 600.

Happy new year to you all, all the best for the year ahead. Mat

And in latter years dem bones dem bones come in containers

My mate who drives for waters used to take cwm coke to Germany and bring bones back to treforest then load coke back up north, didn’t they treat the bones in acid ? Before crushing up for rich tea biscuit s .

Hi dan,
Rich tea biscuits ? Am I missing something here  :open_mouth: 20plus years ago joint motorways used to do 4 plus loads a week, coil out (in a bulker) to usually Belgium then reload bones from pb gelatines in Vilvoorde, just off the Brussels ring.the animal carcass’ would come into vilvoorde by barge and grab machines used to load them onto a conveyor.i will never forget the smell and thousands of rats jumping into the canal as the carcass’ were lifted off the barge!there was a liquid that during hot weather would run out of the back of the trailer and leave indelible stains in the aluminium! Was told back then that diced animal bones were used in pork pies and cosmetics.see mainly Belgian hauliers tipping bones at treforest these days.in my Father’s days of driving for joint it was carried in sacks on flats, usually from Liverpool.
