Cheers Andrew ,it does look to have enough on I used to hang round their stoke depo as a kid thatās where the interest comes from and Iāve put a page on Facebook glyn John transport and thereās a lot of their old drivers on there and getting more as the word spreads
hi steve,
thanks for sharing the pictures,i never knew, until now, that glyn john had a depot in stoke
regards andrew.
Hi all, am I reading this right. That Merc is a 2429, meaning it had a v6 engine. the v6 of that era was 290 or 330, and was normally fitted into 4x2 tractors,1729/1733.
Canāt remember the capacity, but it would be a little underpowered at 38000kg.
The 2435 with the 14l v8 was not the fastest but it did have decent pulling power.
The v6 was faster on acceleration empty, but as soon as you put weight on them you were fighting the box looking for more gears.
Iirc at Gullivers we ran a 1729, and two 1733s with 12 speed manual boxes, not EPS at 32520kgs. 1628s had a slap across 16 speed, 2035s and 2435s 16 speed EPS.
It looks as if G993 is a Powerliner 2 and has the EPS box, double whammy there as you couldnāt rush the EPS like the 6 speed with a splitter.

Hi Andrew, yes the depo was in Chesterton,Newcastle under Lyme, itās still there virtual as it was, Iāll take a picture of it and post it on here. Years after they finished I myself ran my haulage company from the same yard,if fact my operators licence is still from there Not that it will ever get used again. They also rented a little warehouse over the road to store loads they did from corona at tamworth. At first I think there was about 6 or 7 vehicles and numerous trailers up here. They sent 2 brand new F86s up on S regs, there was an atki and a couple of seddi atkis and star of the show a F88 that Sid tideswell drove. The 2 86s and at least one of the seddi atkis were on night trunk to the depos down South Wales, then they would tip and load around the Manchester/Liverpool area in the day. A lot of the South Wales boys would come into the depo.i just canāt find all the stuff I had, I did a project on them for my English exam at school, sad I know later when I had started on my own mission to rule the world they took the work over from a local firm ( O Jones) that used to run off Shelton Bar steel works, all sadly flatten and replaced with endless shops and units that people have until their rate reductions etc run out then they move to the next re generated site I can remember a driver that used to come in, they called him sticker, he must have had the last 86 they had, cuz he kept tellin everybody and I quote, it aināt got a bed see,but itās got a T on the front them were the days. Some really nice blokes and great memories

Hi Andrew, so there was a 14l v8 at 290hp available in the Powereliner 2. That would of gone up to 480 hp at that time then, 290, 350,440 and 480.
The last truck I drove for a living I had new was G580 XAE, a 2035 6x2 twin steer Powerliner 2 with EPS. It was a decent motor, even though we pulled fridge trailers it wasnāt to often we ran at max weight.
Now that would of been a different story on the steel or coal.
Two of the v6 1733s were on contract to Peters pies, running at 32000kgs. They were double shifted but not abused.
daibootsy:
was glyn johns yard nr Redland brickworks Chesterton?
Hi daibootsy, it was in an old brickyard that used to belong to G H Downing bricks and tiles, they were later taken over by steetly, then Redlands then ibstock if I remember correct. The yard was on parkhouse indus est west, there was nowt there when I was a kid other than the brickworks and a firm called Ralph Lawton which was later taken over by BIS, the yard in question became a scrap yard after a brickyard for hamptons, full of old military stuff,I went to school with his son, great place to play all that was left of the brickyard( Brookhouses) was the office, that the hamptons used as a bungalow, this later became gjtās office, but between them leaving and me having the yard Morris Neild transport ( Neild & timmis) had it, you could have been in it as it was a bunkering site for key fuels, parkhouse fuels, they also started making breeze blocks there before they finished but they werenāt very good so never really caught on, Iāll go round in the morning and take a photo

Thanks for that saviem, just wondered if there was any connection to glyn John, jr must have had another job in between and have you any more hidden gems of photos of glyn John would be most grateful, the bollinger is in the post
A couple of shots of the old stoke depo for daibootsy and Andrew , bit overgrown now, donāt think anybody has used it since I moved out. And the little warehouse they had, outside used to be a favourite spot for drivers parking up for the night but theyāve put them rails and a gate up now

Hi Ade, I donāt have any here in Florida but may well do at my sisters house back in Wales. There are a number of albums there so I need to remember to go through them next visit.
Yours is looking really sharp there. I quite often watch past RAC rallyās on you tube, mk I and 2 escorts just brilliant.
Take care Ade.
Did anyone go to the truck racing at Pembrey a few weeks back. Probably a good day out.
Hi Paul, I went down to Pembrey, good weather but the truck racing only had a total of 11 trucks racing in both classes. The top runners started on a reverse grid so a little bit of excitement as they came through the field but then a bit of a procession to the end. Still impressive to see the performance/acceleration of the top class trucks (all MAN). The car racing wasnāt to bad.
