South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

It stands well ,I never think of them being as tall as an Erf.

The driving height was lower than the ERF’s,but the cab height was similar.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dai, it would help if we were able to determine if this Leyland is a 4 or 6 wheeler. I think its an older Bison, probably before the 500 fixed head was available. I am not 100% sure but thought that the fixed head motor was only available in the Buffalo tractor unit, or 6 wheel bison tipper chassis. (much later than 1973)

Regards, Paul.

Hi Steve, cracking pic’s there. An extra link there as that HY-MAC 580C was built in South Wales.

Regards Paul.

Hi all,
My entire knowledge of leyland’s fixed head engines is based on my remembering how I used to dislike going out in j&m’s buffalo, because we never got to where we were going and always came back “on the bar”.

The Williams Bros , are from Nantgaredig the remaining Brother was in the dealership with me a few weeks ago looking at cars despite him no longer having a driving licence !

Hi Dai, that last photo proves its a 4 wheeler and a Lynx as you say. Would it have a Leyland 401 engine in it. I stand to be corrected but Leyland’s engines at that time I thought was limited to the 401, 410 and 680. The 500 fixed head came later.

Perhaps Andrew can remember the reg no of J&Ms Buffalo. I seem to remember a photo of it here somewhere.
Andrew, my mate Chalto ran a Buffalo to Europe mid 70s nearly bankrupt him, always broken down.

Regards Paul.
