Hi Chris, not sure if Portlock are still in business, but I remember them running TK Bedford’s early 80s from Nelson. Wholesale fruit and veg merchants, usually delivering to corner shops at that time.
They were based on a bad bend as you came into Nelson from Ystrad Mynach.
Great photo there.

Regards Paul.

“Backed up on the ■■■■■■■ stones”,I’ve been there a good few times with my D1000 " Dockers Barrow",“Dockers Barrow” the barra’ boys would shout, and they’d come at you from both sides and rear," 'ere 'drive sign 'Ere mite" on a bit of scrappy paper, you needed eyes in the back of your 'ead eh!,but funnily enough I never had any “shortages” at the other end (Barrow) at 4 am next morning ! Albert Docker would bring a “full English” in for me which I sat at his desk and ate while his lads tipped the motor, then they always gave me a a box full of fruit and veg “various” to take back to Kendal for me Mam   It was a gruelling job but an excellent rate. The only draw back was Libbys would ring to ask where I was and could I load for London that afternoon when I’d only been “in kip” for a couple of hours.Oh! and your booked into Stamford St. at 6am next morning :frowning: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:   Happy days Bewick.

Hi Cliff, I left Cardiff September 1991, 22 years ago now.
As a Young teenager my father owned a frozen food business which operated through out the South Wales valleys. I either rode with him or one of his drivers/sales persons and run into all the suppliers to the then small business or corner shop. When Tesco came on the scene things changed.
Living in Rhymney at that time, Hills of Tredegar would run extra buses on Saturday’s for local business’s.
Tesco came in hired Red & White, free ride for customers to shop at Tesco’s. The beginning of the end of town business’ s and service as we once new it.
Portlocks, Sterlings and Ivor Probert of Merthyr and many other family whole sale merchants were hit hard.
When Tesco talk fresh they talk ■■■■, we were delivering fresh meat to customers every day 40 years ago. delivered to their door, and everyone paid on Friday or Saturday. Credit where credit is due. A butcher was a butcher, a baker a baker, you new who you were dealing with and quality and service was part and parcel of the job, along with respect.

Unfortunately, any by pass or new road came to late for South Wales, we needed it 20 years earlier to have half a chance of being competitive.
You know how hard you worked yourself, even with the odds against us. At the end of the day it counted for nothing as the jobs went elsewhere, thanks to big business.
I had a chance to escape and took it.
Still a Valley boy, and proud to be Welsh.

Regards Paul.

They are from Plwmp, near Llandysul West Wales Roy.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave ,
Thanks for the added details.
Bringing plump go-go girls for the lonely Welsh bachelors.

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

One of their drivers was killed on the A5/483 just above Oswestry a few years ago. A car overtaking hit him head on and pushed the artic over the barrier, several cattle were killed going down over. I think it was on the Glyn Ceiriog viaduct.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave ,
Maybe this is the 4 deck livestock semi- trailer that was involved in the fatal accident ?
I photographed it recently in Houghton Parkhouse`s premises, near to where I live.

No disrespect to Patterson Transport ; the family of the deceased driver , or H.P., but this illustrates that even the strongest construction can become torn apart in a severe R.T.A.

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

That damage would be about right for that particular accident Roy. I did see pictures of it in the newspapers and on TV at the time. It was a very bad RTA and I’m amazed that the barriers held the trailer and unit and stopped the lot going down over the side.
Cheers Dave.
