Ah, the Silver Roadways Mercs, and those alloy Duramin trailers. What a lovely fleet.
I thought T&L made a strong bid for Robsons, but that it was rejected…anyone know more?
Cheerio for now.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the photo’s.
A little slow replying, had breakdowns two weeks running with these International Prostars. The maxforce engine has been nothing but trouble.
Supposed to be getting a new Pete next week fitted with a ■■■■■■■■ ISX 15l DPF,EGR and SCR.The maxforce engine is an old MAN block fitted with Caterpillars defunct fuel system and massive EGR. Didn’t make 2010 EPA regulations, a complete disaster. The 2013 engines are now being fitted with the ■■■■■■■ fuel system as used on their own engines. But a little too late; the damage has been done.
Regards to all,
Paulhi paul,
when i read about mechanical troubles,i thought it would be all the emmissions craphave read about problems with cat’s egr.i think
that both ■■■■■■■ and cat have left the truck market now.which seems bizarre to me,just to think that either of those brilliant engines are not being used in on the roads anymore
.alot of the new kenworths have the daf engine in them.good to hear from you and keep that u.s. mail delivered

Hi Andrew, got the word earlier that I will be switching my International Prostar tomorrow for a new Pete, not quite sure which model yet will update you.
Caterpillar pulled out of the on highway engine market back in 2007/8 when the EPA laid out the 2010 emission regs. They couldn’t sell enough engines to recover the development costs of the new technology, especially as a third tier supplier.
■■■■■■■ thought they may beat the SCR route with their ISX 15L, but were proven wrong and joined everyone else with EGR, SCR and DPF ,except Navistar who thought they new better than every other engine maker in the land.
It has proven to be a disaster for them, unfortunately resulting in lay offs at their plants.
The sensors on the DPF fail or send messages to the ECU to either decrease engine power or shut the engine down completely. There is a three stage system to follow to regenerate the filter, but it seldom works correctly. If you don’t shut the engine down yourself you have to get someone out to reboot or clear the fault codes in the ECU.
There is another way, but If you get caught there would be serious fines etc, etc. Just not worth it these days.
On the Maxforce engine you can only do parked regen’s to clean out the filter and this take 28 mins each time. Its nothing to do 4 in a 24 hour shift.
The truck runs 20/21 hours 1180 miles /day plus loading/unloading, fuel stop and now since July 2013 a mandatory 30 min break as well / shift.
So 4 regen’s, especially after breaks can give deadline issues, its just not reliable even in the hands of those drivers who understand the issues and problem and knowing what to do at the right time.
Unfortunately some guys don’t give a toss, and sit on the side of the road for hours, causing all kinds of headaches for the other relay drivers.
We have lost a load of good drivers this past 18 months due to the grief these trucks have given us. We had 80 in a fleet of 150.
The past two weeks we had a rental whilst ours was in the shop, two Prostars in fact both of which had to be returned and switched out at Penske.
I must admit, I was ready to throw the towel in myself. I have had 3 in two years, and hope I never have to drive another, junk real junk.
Lets see how this new ■■■■■■■ runs in the Pete, 50 Volvo’s came earlier in the year with the same motor. Why the company choose ■■■■■■■ I am not sure , as Paccar’s own engine (Daf) built here and Volvo’s are both performing well.
Ollie Dixon of Truck & Driver / World trucks Blog had loads of fun with Navistar telling them of their mistake with this engine and its pending failure.
For years the EPA were behind the Euro levels of Nox and diesel particulates, but EPA 2010 is close to Euro 6.
Hoping for a better week or two starting tomorrow,
Regards Paul.

hiya,
This picture tickles me, the reason being I got a job to take a container to a farm in
the wilds of the Lancashire countryside my instruction to load agricultural parts and to
deliver to Preston Dock, anyway to cut a long story short the place was being used by
a gang of thieves and all the gear for Ireland was stolen and in various stages of being
dismantled, of course “the old bill” had been tipped off and surrounded the place the
motor was seized and held at the farm as evidence, they gave me a lift to a pub which
did digs and took me back when my motor was cleared and I left empty, a cushy couple
of days and never broke sweat, the guys I was dealing with at the farm looked a shady
lot and I remember they all got “bird” the Guvnor wasn’t best pleased with my ex’s claim.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the post.i remember reading about cat. Leaving the truck market, what about Detroit? Have they persevered with the emissions and still supplying truck engines? i have been told by mark lee that alot of new kenworths have the daf engine these days.are detroit diesel still a part of gm? I know that they hit hard times not so long back.look forward to the peterbilt update and some pictures.
Regards andrew.
Daimler Benz acquired Detroit Diesel some years ago and have been using the 12Litre engine in the Axor. A developement of this engine is what’s powering the new Actros.
