South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

That’s just GOT to be my favourite of them all! And with a decent cab on, as well!

pete 359:
Hi all,
Here’s one from m4dogwalker on Briton ferry roundabout, anyone remember that McDonald’s was previously gavali’s cafe.he used to sing your food order through to the staff in the kitchen.he and my grandfather were good friends for many years.

I’ve been in that cafe several times when loading out of Baglan Bay in the 70s Andrew. The park sloped IIRC and one day either a Coastal or Wincanton parked on the slope on a nice hot sunny day and the Styrene in the tank expanded and ran down the overflow pipes forming puddles of the stuff all over. Styrene is a sweet-smelling product, can give you a nasty headache as well being inflammable. I found the driver and we went back outside,he moved the motor and we smothered the puddles of Styrene with stones/grit/owt and nobody was any the wiser. Happy days.

Graham beat me to it. Gay Day it was. They left Merthyr, probably in the late sixties, for Stoke on Trent I believe. They stopped trading many years ago. The product was not the best. A good friend of mine worked for them as a salesman. Sales method was 13 to the dozen.

Hi Graham and Alan. Thanks for the replies.
I must admit Corona pops were much better than anything else on the market at that time.
Their KMs with white double bumpers looked the business, bodie’s sloped into the centre and always nicely sheeted.

What became of Sterlings, fruit/veg and frozen foods? Their place was behind the railway station and coal yard. They ran a bunch of dark blue D series Fords, flat beds and early curtainsided/box bodie’s. The Commers had walk thru cabs with sliding/folding doors, fridge bodies and were light blue and white.
The likes of these companie’s, Robirch, Walls meats, Stan Thomas pies and Ready Roasted chickens would be seen 6 days a week deliveing to the high street and corner shops, not to forget the bread guys as well.

How about the milk that came out of Merthyr, can’t remember that company name but a lot of their guys drove for Morlias coaches as well, usually in the PM.
Was it Con------?

Andrew, not meaning to hi-jack the thread.
Great photo’s as usual, Daibootsy didn’t Port Eynon run F86s and 1625/8 merc’s. Similar paint scheme to W.A. and V.B. Davies.

Regards to all,
Paul.

Hello all,in the late seventies–early eighties I worked for Maxiheat in LLantrisant we used to call in that cafe most mornings for acup of tea,we knew it as Ron’s,there were four of us most days i’m not sure how much a cup of tea was,but Ron would always say the price and tell you there was a penny off for no sugar!!! I agree it was a good cafe.all the best,Derrick
