Oh…and will we have that silly music when we see a certain truck?

We have even had some one in special to supply the meat…

well sbf10 caught red handed working on a scania half way to belgum just doing a top end engine set hence hammer and screwdriver someone has to help the v8 boys out lol

You can even hear Erb making some witty comment…like have you tried a Philips screwdriver…with Bonney lad more likely to be a screwdriver with an extra twist of that refined sugar cane…

Hi lads,
Good input lads :sunglasses: .that’s a bloody Scania for you, eventually! gets as far as Kent running solo and dies, you wouldn’t get that with sbf10’s volvo  now that bloody thing WILL be at the lar this July even if Harry and I drag it over on the bar!
See you at the bar in the hotel Friday night lads! I gather a new model truck will be in attendance  :sunglasses: .
Regards andrew.

Andrew - this thread is genius! Its single-handedly got me to join Trucknet!

There’s so many memories on here; a few people I know being mentioned; a few pics of firms I’ve driven for and a few of wagons I’ve been in. Not one I’ve driven yet though as far as I remember so I’ll have to rectify that shortly! It all makes me wish I took more pics over the years of motors I’ve driven.

Thanks all who’ve contributed - it’s brought a lot of smiles. It’s also taught me a few things - for instance I remember Mansel Davies having a few ERFs and Leylands on feed back in the day but I never realised they had Scanias. Revelation!

Hope you don’t mind me resurrecting a few old posts with new comments now and again.

west wales based m.j. williams, sadly no longer with us,they had a smart fleet.

This truck was one of the first I ever rode in as a kid. My old man knew Mackie Williams and he used to take me up to his yard where Mackie’s son John, then about 15, used to take me for a spin around the disused airfield nextdoor. I remember my sister being on the back of this old Dodge at the local carnival, then me having a ride back to the yard in it. I was probably about 5 and absolutely truck mad. The Seddon Atkis were my faves at the time (partly thanks to passing JR’s yard and seeing the lineup of Borderers and 400s!) tho I don’t recall riding in the 401 in the next pic - but did go in one of his older 400s at least once.

Mackie’s still around but not driving any more. The company went after they lost B+I traction work to another local haulier - Evans and Williams who are also featured here. That’s business I spose. Mackie’s son John came back with some trucks in his own name and ran for a good few years - he gave me a break as a moonlighting driver on the milk so I owe him big time! John now drives for Murco on the fuel tankers out of Milford Haven.

Hopefully I’ll managed to post below a pic of one of John’s EC14s - a 380 with a Twinsplitter, which was one of the first wagons I drove after passing my test.

Sorry Mike, I’m going to be a bit of a disappointment on that - I don’t have any pics that old! Of the few old film prints I might have had I can’t find. Here goes a try to post one of John Williams’ motors though:

That stirs a few memories, sime. I drove for a time for W.G.Watkins (Garfield) who was based not far from Haverfordwest, just outside Tenby. He ran almost identical Dodges in almost identical livery as Mackie.

Quite proud of this one - me next to a Mk2 Contractor in Texaco Pembroke (now Chevron) - it belonged to probably the most famous South Wales haulier of all! This was about 1981 ish. Dad was a local reporter for the Evening Post and knew the Texaco PR guy - so I came along as he covered the story of this move (all on site as the load was pulled off a barge on a slip by Texaco’s jetty). I got to ride in this as it crawled along. There was a Mk1 pushing as well on some bits, IIRC. Bob Tuck eat yer heart out!

Pembrokeshire was Dodge city in the seventies! Loads of firms running K’s and Commandos and Spanish Dodges - Maurice Hughes must’ve been very competitive on price at Merlin Motors!

I can think of a few local people running them - Maurice Smith had a Spanish Dodge, Arthur Howells had a K or so his daughter Dawn (a colleague in my current job) tells me, Mackie Williams had at least one K, George Edwards had just about every Dodge going at one time or another and Picton Bros ran Blue Commandos and K’s IIRC. There must be more. Another local OD I recall was Mackie Philips who ran a red G16 tipper with a Merc engine - based near Broad Haven. Can’t remember Garfield Watkins though - but I bet some of my colleagues will…

Going a bit further back (late forties I reckon) - this is why I was truck mad in the first place. My Grampy in his Austin oil tanker, which he piloted (along with many others, Bedfords etc) round the lanes of Pembrokeshire for many years. Teddy Cook was a legend - and got me hooked with his stories!

And I said I didn’t have any pics ‘that old’!

Heres some quick, basic, and fairly cheap little models I’ve been putting together, at least one is relavant to this thread. More coming soon.
Neil.

Hi Andrew thanks for getting back to me . Have a great party but dont get to drunk ! Did you know that the Shropshire truck is moving from Oswestry to Shrewsbury this year ? It’s in the west mid show ground . It is going to be a bigger show . May be you and some of the Steel boys might be interested ? Tony

Does no one else remember Lyn Howells Transport? I used to do the day run when the regular driver was on holiday. The night trunker said it took him half an hour longer to undo all the ropes and sheets.

Hi Dave there is a great article in commercial motor this week . The man with the old F88 that is still working . It has an article on the man and truck . Its really good and it proves newer is not all ways good . Tony
