Here are a few from Llanwern Slag approx 1986.All gone now.Early morning in Llanwern.Sun just coming up waiting to load tarmac. My first lorry a Foden Haulmaster had a V8 ■■■■■■■ totally unreliable.Converted to ■■■■■■■ 14l 250 she didn
t hang around!!Gordon Dorrington behind with new unit ERF E14 bought from Frank Tucker in Exeter.Replaced his C series daycab 8lxb. Austin with The Gipsy Queen in Llanwern, sheeted with tarmac. At the time second lorry run by Jimmy Nash. Jimmy Nash just loaded and sheeted, original weighbridge in background with Volvo F7 weighing out.If axle weights were not right a quick sprint off weighbridge and application of brakes soon made load shift.More like a landing strip. Jimmy
s Foden with pile of freshly crushed slag behind. The smell is something you cannot describe.Personally I loved it, like bitumen out of a tarmac plant.Sure a lot of tipper boys know what i mean!
Malcolm Price with my Dad
s SA 400 in Llanwern. Jimmy Nash and Gilbert Hughes in Llanwern.Have some more photo
s of Gilberts volvo tipping on Barber Green. Will post later.Fresh lime from Derbyshire being offloaded behind. Line up of old 80
s lorries outside Heckett`s building in Llanwern.Waiting for loads to come out of weighbridge.

Hi richgriff, briliant pics of us slag boys, feels just like yesterday, gordon drove that erf and willcox trailer from new when it was owned by my father john Marston and then he bought it from my dad later on , the bloke with the traffic cone on his head was chris williams who owned the day cab foden , if youve more pics please put them on, Cheers, Dave Marston.

Have been busy so have not posted for a while.Just sold my Atki Borderer 240 to a good home up north and have started taking a Leyland Clydesdale tipper apart. It has a 410 blown engine,so should pick her feet up.Cab is Bathgate variety held together by fresh airHave a good one to put on.Will post some pics next week. Here
s some more.Enjoy. Some more from Llanwern Slag, the boys on tarmac today.Dave Marston with C series,I think it had a 240 ■■■■■■■■■■ Drivers taking timeout waiting to tip.Natty head wear for the occasion!! Chris Williams
Foden,of which there is a sideview on the miners strike thread.Only dressed up with weldmesh.
Gordon Dorrington
s beautiful B series with rain cooled Gardner 240 and CF tipping trailer. This outfit was bought new together.I believe still together today in Woolaston.Dad
s SA400 behind and jimmy Nashs Foden last. Mike Edwards Foden and tandem. On the job. Gilbert Hughes
F12 and triaxle, great shot having nearly completed his tip.Always loved the Indian head painted on the door.Subtle, but effective.

Hello all.
I would respectfully suggest to certain members that this thread is not a battleground for commercial activities that may or may not have happened between volvo dealers in years gone by,and especially if one or more of the alleged wrongdoers cannot defend themselves,This cant be allowed to go any further in my opinion as it all started from an innocent question as who had the first F86 in this area.Let us please go forward without who done this and who done that and enjoy the knowledge of the thread contributors in a different light,You may agree or disagree but this of course is my humble opinion.
kindest regards to all and a merry christmas. Graham.

i must admit that I never had any problems with the griffin bros, today i received a call saying the F86 that Evans of New Tredegar bought was actually second hand and may have been the first used truck sold by Griffin mill.My colleague suggests that the first volvo may have been sold to eddie boyle in cardiff in 1967, eddie bought a couple of volvos from the griffins, the last one in about 1975 again another f86, by that time they were fitted with the larger TD70C engine which pushed out just over 200 bhp coupled to the volvo 8 speed box, a very lightweight but capable 32 tonner

Holan48, Hi Evans were from Dukestown old Tredegar. They ran more 88s than 86s, and bought our ex HY-MAC F86 S reg with a 33ft trailer to restore back in 1985/86.
Evans coaches were from New Tredegar, Phillipstown.
Regards to all, Paul.

apologies Paul,my memory is not as good as it used to be, i only remember them having one f88, a 1971 240bhp with the old style metal grill to the front of the cab, that was also put in part ex with Griffin mill for a newer early type f12 with the flat roof cab.not sure if they are still in business

Hi Rich, yes you are right , the job is dead, we pushed hard up untill about 6 years ago and then called it a day while we still had a bob or two, ive been the transport manager at H&N Bounds transport, chepstow since then but packed that up earlier this year and set up my own drivers agency with just me doin the driving, trying to keep it just to a few local hauliers and so far so good, fortunately as we got out when the goin was good we arent under pressure so i can be picky, Laid up at mo after a hernia op so glad i discoverd this site ! Im going to try to attach a photo with this but not sure if ive got the hang of it yet, Cheers for now

Entress had a lot of Volvo F86’s,but probably not off Griffin Mill. They were some of the first F86 Volvo’s that I saw in the 1960’s.
