hi all,
whilst on the subject of volvo trucks in south wales.here is a little christmas quiz question for everyone.can anyone tell us what was the first new volvo truck sold by griffin mill at pontypridd and which operator was it supplied to? i didnât know the answer so asked my mate bob who knows about these things
so hop along rowly, donât even think about asking him, cause heâs primed ready for you
.rowly get well soon mate and to all the many contributors to this thread,i wish you all a happy christmas and all the very best for 2013.neil sorry we wont be going to sharpness again on new years day as my truck is still in kit formâŚthough it will be malvern very soon.have a great holiday everyone.

now for something completely different, this is a shot of my 1989 f16 that i restored 5 years ago (after i sold my f88),seen here in glencoe on the road to fort william in september 2006.
first volvo sold by Griffin Mill was an F86 tractor unit to evans transport new tredegar it was red in colour with a blue and white racing stripe over the cab, i think it was on a G plate, they later bought it back as a part ex against a 240 bhp F88 it sat i the yard for years until it was purchased for next to nothing by a new starter from cardiff.
i think the first big fleet purchase was either Bulmers cider from hereford or Sun Valley poultry who part ex,d a load of seddon artics that ended up going for scrap

Evening Gentlemen, ah Griffin Mill, could`nt sell a lorry to anybody unless they were âpinchingâ someone elses business!!!
Both the above deals were pinched from Hartshornes, by dumping the price!!!
Griffin M ill, was, were, and always would be, a second class Dealership!!
Why on earth Phill Ives thought them suitable to carry the Volvo banner totally escapes me!!
Oh, their ability with used vehiclesâŚwell I ask youâŚblind or what!!! and they never grasped the concept of after sales at all!
Have I upset anyone? Well take me on!
Cheerio for now.
sounds like you had a few bitter experiences with Clive and Colin Griffin, they did manage to upset quite a few big customers including glyn john transport who dropped volvo and bought transcons after an arguement over aftersales.Horace and Bob the sales reps pulled all sorts of tricks to get companies to buy from the Griffins, never heard about them undercutting Hartshornes but nothing surprises me about the brothers grimm

hi all,
WHAT HAVE I STARTED
holhan48 thanks for your input, you could well be correct, though thats not what i was told
though to be fair it was an f86âŚor so i gather
. saviem thanks for the earlier pm and your griffin mill posting, thatâs what internet forums are all about, opinions and information
.
regards andrew.
the griffins were also the first subaru dealers in wales, they ran it from an old garage in rhydyfelin in pontypridd, it was called startraction.in those days subaru were not known for ultra performance rally cars but they did build the first 4x4 pick up that could do over 100mph,it had a flat four cylinder 1600 engine ,i think they called it the mv. the griffins closed the garage down about 5 years later and it stood empty for a few years but has now been knocked down and replaced with office blocks, everything the griffins did made them money.
the volvo dealership used 2 subaru pick ups for years for breakdown work and parts delivery, they were fantastic motors but suffered from severe rust, the odd one turns up on e bay from time to time but they are now quite scarce
Interesting to read the posts about the Griffin brothers,I worked for a Porthcawl haulier,Glyn Morgan, and he bought the 19th F86 that Griffin Mill sold, its reg. was RTX 971F.It came on the road on the 1st of April 1968 which is etched in my memory forever because the first week in April that year it snowed every day and there was me going via the old Usk-Monmouth road every day with a brand new artic and trailer loaded up with a full load of steel.
At that time several firms were running F86s,Entress from Swansea being one. What a huge change from the tin front Mk 3 AEC I had been driving.Im afraid I don
t agree with previous posts about the Griffin Brothers,we always found them to be very accommodating and in fact Glyn Morgan bought about 6 off them including one of the first F88s in the area.
Can I take this opportunity to wish you all the condiments of the season.
