South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

pete 359:
hi all,
here’s one that will annoy my mate bewick!based at newport depot this 11 plate fh has been driven by my mate pee wee for two weeks on an agency contract.i know what people say about “the green death” but,as peewee told me,“taking home 600 quid a week to ponse about in this new fh is a cracking job!!!” must say i agree with him!!! :sunglasses: .
[album][/]

Now hey up a moment Andrew,it’s you thats “defacing” your own thread by putting shots like this on it Boyo !! I wouldn’t dream of posting garbage like this on any thread !! However, contrary to popular opinion,I’ve no axe to grind either way with"fast eddie",they never did me any harm personally, the haulage industry in general, yes, but I was out of it before they really started to ruin it “big time”.Now then Andrew, are you sure your not a “closet” Spotter ? We’ll have to keep a close eye on you my son or before long you’ll have re-finnished that Texan Atki in the fleet colours of “the fast one”,what a horrible thought (and sight!),one of The Steel Boys will probably carve you up on the first outing next season mate !! Cheers Dennis.

pete 359:

Thanks for posting those Pete, the proper model number the truck is a 64T vnl780, its the biggest cab they make now but you can order the 880 model special order only. In the internal pictures are the fridge and micro slot, and the “office” as they call it, the bunk with its own steps are above. Interesting to see a guy called Mark Hobbs posting pictures, do you know him? is it the Mark Hobbs who worked for the S.W. Echo? then took over the photography department there many moons ago, if so he should know me as he was an assistant of mine.
On the road a lot right now but will try to check in regular, was asking Dave Beer where the pics of Roy’s F12 were will keep looking, and try to post another picture of what the truck looks like after a trip to Edmonton, cheers Chris…

Hi all, Andrew thanks for the mention, the Volvo VNMs are the business. That’s a 770/780 in the picture. We just took delivery of 40, with the ■■■■■■■ 15l ISX with I shift.
If you look to the left there is a Volvo/GMC WA. This was the North American F88. That’s a standard sleeper and was an updated version of the first inetrgral sleeper introduced after taking over White/GMC trucks in the 80s. That WA looks clean and has to be 1998 or older as it was replaced by the VN in 1999.

steelboyfi0, the early cabs were made in Sweden, shipped bare and upholstered here.

Regards Paul.

Hi Chris,
Mark Hobbs is a flickr contact of mine, I wrote to him some time ago with regard to posting his pictures on the thread Past Present and In Between, his response was positive and happy that I would post his photos on TucknetUK within the Creative Commons Licence Terms. Because of his South Wales location and lorry photos of that region I post them on here as well.
Cheers
Oily
ps I will mention your name to him and get back to you.

No offence , But theses topliner drivers of to-day couldnt drive one of these old AECs, Lets LOL, Eh, I remember stopping on the old A1 in the 50s when an AEC Artic belonging to P,G.Walton of Gateshead being driven by the late Eddie Bates, who was in fact one of the great drivers in his heyday, His lights had gone out on the unit & the trailer, we checked what could be the problem , & it had blown a fuse, so the quickest remedie was a bit of silver paper from a packet of giggies wrapped around the the blown fuse, & he was on his way, So what would these Toppers do in a situation like that to-day, Oh dear, they would use their in cab hands free phone & ask for assistance, Then some fitter would be called out to solve their problems, which of course is now all Diagnostic & has to be plugged in to a lap top to tell them what the problem is, Give me the good old bloody days anytime IMO, Regards Larry.
