Reading this South Wales thread jogs the old memory. When I was on for A E Evans tankers I was asked to do a local job out of BP Baglan Bay to Porter Paints at Ferndale. Our two local drivers were not available to do it.I remember it was 3000 galls of toluene, about 12 tons, and I had a Mandator at the time,OKC 130M with a 6000gall tank.Iâd never heard of Ferndale, but I got loaded and stayed in Neath for the night.I canât for the life of me remember too much about the trip, only that I went over what was called Maerdy Mountain to Ferndale,it was drizzling and misty and the trailer wheels were well over the white lines when climbing up,with cars belting down the other way. When I got over, the mist cleared, and in sight of the paint works I came across a 7 and half ton weight limit bridge ,but the thought of making a diversion was a no-no,so over it I went. The feller in the works had seen me coming and was grinning like a Cheshire cat when I stopped. He explained that a lot of drivers still used the Maerdy road instead of going up the A465 Glyneath and down through Aberdare to Ferndale.I wonder if there is a weight limit on that road now and if that bridge is still standing,it was 1974 when I did the job.
I also remember doing local work, about 1970, with an 8-wheeler AEC MK5 out of Baglan Bay,carrying Styrene to Powell Duffrynâs tank farm at Barry for storage, and queuing up at the side of steam locos parked up for scrapping, the place was next door to Dai Woodhams scrap yard.
As usual,no camera,very much regretted.

hi chris,
i havenât been up to ferndale for a very long time.i think? i can recall the bridge you mention,i can recall very well woodhamâs in barry, that was a hell of a sight for me as a young kid on a day out in barry island in the early 70âs.during the 80âs i used to see a lot of low loaders running out of barry with locomotives for preservation, mike lawrenceâs mighty mack was one i remember leaving barry,itâs a fair old pull heading up out of the town with a loco

That looks like a coil liner on the end? I didnât realise c.pike did steel,I thought they were on brick and block
Andrew, I cant say I remember seeing them aound with that coiler, but seeing as they are virtually next door neighbours to a certain Spencer works, it would make sense for them to have done it at some point.

I think you are right about it being Queen street Andrew, I think the corner building above the offside, front of the buses roof was and still is the Principality building which would mean we are looking down from the castle end with what is now Macdonalds on the right.
Neil.
Hi Neil,
Yes it still looks fairly similar now.my old man has told me they used to go in and out the city that route during the 60âs,it would have been one of the main routes to and from south/west wales.I canât remember that though,I am far too young
Regards Andrew.
I remember the old A48 from Newport to Cardiff went through St. Mellons (there was a weighbridge on Cardiff Road in Newport, right next door to Mrs Balesâ digs) It was four lanes into Cardiff, not dual though, bit of a racetrack, and to miss the City Centre you could turn left down by the jail and come out tâother side of town, not far from Ely Transportâs yard.I think the area was called Roath near the jail,Iâm going back late 60s so to say Iâm a bit hazy would be an understatement.
Hi all.
Just back from Dominican Republic, I enjoyed the time which included a visit to the Brugal rum bottle plant. Got talking to one of the drivers there, they operate all MACKs so the tour had to wait for me taking photos after the samples. What a wonderfull time. If they donât appear, then Iâll send them to Pete 359, along with some more of Tony Morgans fleet. Love some of the photos and the talk of places I have not spoke or heard of for such a long time.
Cheers Howard
