Some of the most basic

some of the most basic questions are being asked on here.
who the [zb] are being recruited into the transport industry nowadays? :unamused:
can i drive for 5 hours? is it ok to run over 4.5 hours if the yard is only a short distance away? how many days are there in a week?
what next?
there’s 3 pedals in my brand new truck, so i did a VOR.
which side do i sit on to drive?
it got dark, so i called daf aid.

ā– ā– ?
strange post.

It has probaly always been the same in some ways just in the old days you would made a fool of yourself asking someone or winged it until you found out. Wheras now you can ask questions with a certsin amount of anonimity.
Although some questions posted do border on the ludicrous.

Agreed, it is easy to forget how daunting those first few drives were.

If you asked a stupid question when i was growing up. I got a clip around the lug, and if I didnt understand the answer, I got another one :stuck_out_tongue:

Maybe we need a virtual slap button on the internet.

I think Eurotunnel should offer that as a service

Preamps whey should the amount you see with battlescars from the train.

Does anyone else think that this could be a result of H&S bullpoo, with fathers not being able to take their kids who in turn would have gone on to be drivers with so much knowledge handed down? I think people seem to be getting in the job for the wrong reason, I recall a post from a couple of weeks ago with someone moaning about doing 13 hours ffs. Just my opinion.

Nice one Big vern!!! Made me smile.

I didn’t have internet access when I started driving, however, I was lucky to be part of a small team and I could ask all the stupid questions in the world!!!

I actually agree with Phil :open_mouth:

Nobody was born knowing all the rules / regs, but how can you possibly have a C or C+E licence and not know the basics such as the 4.5hr driving (EU rules of course - not domestic) limit etc?

That Is part of it I’d say. I’d guess if you done a poll on here at least half the drivers on here got in to the job because a relative or family friend was a driver and they used to go with them as a kid.

yes you can drive 5 and 6 hours with out brake.just prepared some money -pay penalty   .and you need prepared if it is will be you last driving day in this company.

As a new driver you are taught to drive the truck only. Yes, there is a theory test but the reality is it falls very short of providing the real world info you need to work full time as an LGV driver.

No-one shows you a digi-tacho and how to use it…no one shows you how to fill in a tacho. At least, my instructor did, but it isn’t an integral part of the test. No one explains POA/Break/Rest properly. I could go on and on and on!

This type of info. is something you learn on the job at the moment. The questions may be coming from people that have only just started out as drivers so haven’t been in the job that long. The hours rules aren’t simple and can be confusing when you’re starting out. Maybe the new CPC will help…but I doubt it.

I must agree however, that to not be aware of the 4.5hours driving rule is pretty worrying. :open_mouth:

^^^ This

I only passed my test 2 years ago and it is true I got my licence and my CPC with out fully understanding the rules. But then I got a job and didn’t want to risk breaking the Rules so I just searched what I needed to know online. Everything is on the Internet that you need to know and I found 1 site that clearly explained it at the time.
But it is true, there shouldn’t of been a need for me to do all that

i don’t think anyone ā€œfullyā€ understood the rules when they started out, all of us will admit that. it’s a minefield of stupid rules and regulations.
but everyone should know the basics. this site is great for finding out about the more complex parts, but sometimes we are waiting for a question like ā€œdo i have to stop on a red light?ā€
