The reason I ask this question is the fact that I have been around the block a few times with different companies and agencies. Is it pay, equipment or conditions?
If you look at some of my previous threads you can see I move around allot, the main reason has been conditions followed by equipment and the least been pay as My wife is the main income provider and having a pension from previous military service.
I see my employers as renting my licence not owning it, so when they try to give me duff gen on driving or WTR regulations that put my licence in jeopardy I pull my card and bid them good bye.
If the equipment is faulty or duff I will give them time to rectify it or replace it. If they don’t or they take more than 2 hours again I pull my card and bid them good bye.
As to pay, this has not been a motivator, apart from the fact that I think it is a total disregard to myself and fellow drivers if I agree to work for less than £8.50ph for class 1 and £8.00ph for class 2 (day rates). I would rather take a rest day than work for less. I understand that there is allot of drivers that do not have the financial stability as myself.
The main reason for this post is that my motivation priorities may be changing. Last week I worked 2 days for a new agency (A) and 1 day for my normal agency (B). Friday I looked at my bank account and what I got paid for my 2 days from agency (A) would take me 5 days from agency (B). The hours of work were the same, just the rates were different. The equipment from both were fine and they didn’t expect you to horse on to get the job done.
I did prefer agency (B) due to the vehicles but the rate of pay from (A) means I can have Heinz beans on toast rather than Aldi Beans on toast.
Over to you.
I’ve worked at my place for 8 years and haven’t driven for anyone else I can’t see myself leaving either. I’m not there for the conditions that’s for sure I know I could get an easier days work else where and have been offered it but I’m paid well enough to have a comfortable lifestyle and I have a decent bit off kit to drive each day. I’m never gonna afford a swimming pool in my house but I won’t ever need to live in a caravan either. I would say my main motivation to getting up and going each day is that I work for a small family business I get looked after in ways I know I wouldn’t working for a bigger outfit, I like having my name on my cab and not a fleet number.
If works slack my boss stays in doors I don’t get sent home early and he always makes sure he can find me something to do to drag a full day out,if my cars in for mot or repairs for a few days he’ll give me one off his it’s little things like this that make me appreciate working at my place I like being a name rather then a number and I like to think I’m a loyal person and its nice to have some loyalty back would I get that with my easier days work else where I doubt it.
Karl86.
What size of boots do you take, as I would like to fill them.
You are what every driver strives for. Good on yer mate.
It’s nice to here a driver is happy in his or her work.

Lol ill see if its quite tomorrow and if I’m sweeping the yard or cleaning his truck for him you can have my boots! It’s not perfect but it’s stable I do sometimes fancy a different challenge but I don’t like change tbh on the whole I feel fairly lucky I don’t come from a driving background but have always been interested in anything that moves and I kind off just fell into driving if I was asked at 16 what I was gonna be it wouldn’t have been a lorry driver but I wouldn’t change it now I know some people have it easier than I have but there’s alot that have it worse I suppose if its not broke dont fix it.
mainly because i have my ‘own’ run, which is a good one IMO.some of the 40 plus drivers are all over the country on different runs every day.i like the rut i’m in! also, the depot is about 7 minutes from my house, and i could walk if need be.could probably get a bit better money elsewhere, but you can’t have it all ways.
i work for one of the big names other than stobart and like every one else I have days where I love the job and days where its the worst job in the world I get a reasonably good truck to drive we do decent work and I earn a reasonably good living 33k last year so I cant really complain I have been around a bit and worked for some brilliant companies also ive worked for some right dodgy ones too the place i work isn’t going anywhere anytime soon the money is there every week on time without fail

Prima donna drivers .
Try investing in a couple of trucks with your own money and see if your attitude is the same, no wonder you move around a lot.
I like where I work, been there 6 months & have fitted in quite well. They let me go at my own pace, I don’t take the ■■■■ but if I want a break, I take a break & always ring in when empty.
Average driving per day is between 6-7 hours with a few 9-10 hours now & again, roughly 1200 miles a week, odd night out & quite a lot of sitting around getting loaded/unloaded.
Money is ok, salaried at 50 hours a week & any extra is paid after 17 weeks, night outs are cash in hand.
They just gave me a brand new tractor unit to play with (although they will use it for the night trunk sometimes )
A job is what you make of it, I’ve known ‘Drivers’ who’s sole purpose is to get finished early & they rush around like Lunatics only to be stressed out all the time. I just leave early & get back ‘when I get back’.
Can’t see me leaving any time soon, the company seem to be buying more motors & don’t look like they are struggling. As long as I do my Job & they do their Job/Pay me every week I’m Happy
Are more drivers staying put now because of pay? A few years ago when drivers where needed if you moved jobs your pay went up now if you see job advertised it’s usually for less pay so nobody moves.
Never been treated with such respect and decency (returned) as by my present employer, thats the prime reason for staying.
Other than that excellent salary, no nights out, reasonable hours (no POA), easy work, no RDC prisons to sit in listening to crap, so long as you do the job right they never bother you.
Just hope it stays like this and i can see me time out here.
Quite a few reasons really.
Monday to Friday only.
8am start and usually done for 5.30pm.
No nights out.
Never asked or expected to break the law.
Fairly new trucks, albeit only Renault Premium’s.
Treated like a person, not just a number.
Pay is far from the worst I’ve ever had.
And I’ve been promised my ADR next month.

I am the same as karl but only been here 7 years, the perks far out weigh the money to me as well. there are some days I could strangle my boss he shouts I shout, but we sort things in the end and never hold a grudge. left to sort my own truck when it needed replacing so all in all I won’t be leaving here until I retire I hope
my gaffer lets my work round my hospital appointments and i do go very often after an illness.
also we have two yards and one i can walk to if need be.
i moan like a good un but really cant see me moving and i think as far as transport is concerned we are about as secure as you can get.

not necessarily! you try " loosing " your job, through no fault of your own
last July and then working every single day legally till march!
agency leeches have Donald ducked it big style, but not as much as THE big multi nationals who think there doing you a favour by PAYING you £7.75 per hour for 71 hours a week!
in the old days, you could punch your boss on the nose, and drive for joe blogs with better wages and bigger BHP!
I miss them red telephone boxes and a pile of coins looking for a backload!
WHY DID THEY KNOCK THE BERLIN WALL DOWN AND INVENT MOBILE PHONES!
easiest work for the best pay and least hours.
Good hourly rate with plenty of hours (which I want, could do less if I wanted to…)
Steady job,with minimum hassle
Fairly new motors (mine is one of the oldest on a 59 plate, most are 12 plate)
Paid weekly
Home everynight
…only downside is your boots smell of chicken ■■■■ all day
Just started back with my last firm before I left the UK
Decent money for what the job is regular pretty set hours. Pretty secure as they have actualy expanded during the recession and allthough the trucks wouldn’t be fit to go to truckfest they are 100% legal and no worries with vosa on that or tachos.
Let you get on with the job and only realy get in touch if there’s been a ■■■■ up or change of plan but that’s not often as the bloke on the transport desk is good at his job.

I work for a small family firm too :D:D:D:D - if work is slack my boss tells me I am a useless xxxx and sacks me… if I start to leave the yard after a 16 hour day I get a rollocking and either get sacked or disowned
:D:D: - I would love to be a number - I cannot remember the last time my “boss” used my real name
… and as a final insult one of the mechanics has been wearing an old denim jacket and now when he sees me he shouts “daaaaaaaaaaddddddddddddd I think I did it wrong again” !
at least it makes me laugh
Great pay. Nice people to work for. Take breaks when i want and go home when i want. What else could I ask for?
