Is it fixed or by the hour I’m sure they all have a different spin on it
Just imagine going to work on a Monday morning and not getting home till Friday night or Saturday morning so that’s working around the clock from the time you leave home to the time you come home regardless of the time you get spending time trying to entertain yourself to make the 15 or 20 quid make it worth your while
That’s what I don’t understand why would you do it for that

Depends on the job how people get paid.
We paid hourly doing euro with a guarantee of 12 hours, so as did happen, even if you worked a couple of hours, or you were waiting over or weekended, you still got paid. Happened on a Sunday it was double time. Paid ferry time and you could work 20 hours and get paid 60. Add in expenses and hotels for half the nights out and we weren’t short of applicants.
The guys i work with who do it get a day rate regardless of wether they do a 15 or a 10.
You bet its mainly max hours so bit of a mugs game really cos the day rate divided by a 15 is barely minimum wage i dont think some of the guys know how to use a calculator or they are just happy to be away from home.
The one’s I’m looking at are paid by the hour for your actual working time (not daily rest) then the night out allowance on top when you’re parked up.
At the end of the day it’s down to personal preference as to why people decide to do it. I’m looking at going back into it as I prefer that way of working to driving home after 15 hours and being back in 9 hours later. I do have a nice home life, but this is what suits us as a family.
Every Monday you’ll see vans full of tradesmen headin south and every Friday you’ll see them heading north. Do you think that they get paid 5x 24 hours for this? Do you think the Ryanair pilot on a layover gets paid whilst sitting around reading pilotnetuk?
Why on earth would you even expect a tramper to be paid 24 hours a day? Unless of course you don’t and are merely on a fishing trip?

Guessing by the Ops name this is a fishing trip again
Sent from goodness knows where
I think the only people paid 24hours are HM Forces?
il bite also…
when i was driving full time, then i prefer trip money where you just go at your own pace.
nowadays when i take a trip on,its the same rules.
i set/haggle my price and then its my money against my time which means just do what needs done and max income for min hours away.
work legal and make a normal decent wage,or use your initiative and crack on .
paid by the hour makes it boring if your one of those that needs to drag the job out for an extra few quid, and paid daily can be just as boring for those not doing their best .( british workers work ethics and all that)
Cousin of a friends of mines uncles sister told m theres a guy who does tramping and is only doing 10 hour days and is always put up in a hotel.
Paid from the minute he leaves yard till he gets home on a friday or saturday.
I wont reveal the company you will all want a job there. Hes taking home over £1000 a week and every hotel he goes to there is an ■■■■■■ waiting for him at reception. Free tea and coffee in the room as well. Plush life.
Our trampers are paid a flat rate no matter what hours they work, but don’t get any breaks deducted, so in effect, their hourly rate is slightly more, if that makes sense.
Ken.
Well as a tramper I don’t have to run home to the yard every night - so theres a big saving in fuel - how much fuel does a fully loaded truck use in an hour ? Instead I can use that hour to get close to my next drop . That means I have an hour more driving the next day meaning I get a little more done each day - more work done - more money made .Over the course of 5 days it all adds up - the truck has more paying miles done , less dead miles all adds up to a more profitable truck and if your smart and pick a good employer there will be more money in your pocket . And I’m not just talking night out money here . I’m paid better than what others in our yard are getting . I cook my own food and suit myself as regards start and finish times . No stressing about if I’m getting home in time , I have regular runs , plenty of parking spots mostly all with toilets and some with showers , some in customers yards with no problems regarding ovenight parking . I leave the house on a Monday return on a Friday night/Saturday morning and don’t expect to be home between that , sometimes I am and count that as a bonus . When I’m at home - I’m at home , when I’m at work - I’m at work I keep the two places very seperated . It works for me - only once in 20 years have I missed the Friday/Saturday night steak dinner , preperation and planning all help and a good boss that knows if I’m slightly off the planned route its for a good reason (usually for a bit of shopping or a shower ).
I got pulled at Perth one afternoon and cop said you were over your hours by 5 minutes 2 days ago . Yep i replied I refuse to park in a layby on the side of a road with cars and trucks going past shaking the cab every 2 minutes you dont get a good nights sleep . I look for a layby thats in off the road at the very least where you dont get shook everytime something goes past . No problem he says .
3000 wat inverter to power the microwave , toaster , kettle , tv and firestick . Unlimited internet on the phone and a gas stove and , kettle and saucepan as a back up. A fridge full of good food and a cupboard full of biscuits , crisps , tins of soup etc .
I’m happy in my own company - I don’t need to be the center of attention its a lifestyle (if you want to call it that ) that suits me - it might not be for everyone but thats ok , other people do different things and thats ok as well .
As you can see I get a little further that the average dayman and I like that as well breakfast in a different place each day and a different sunset every evening .
The job is what it is. Tramping isn’t all bad and your not working all that time. Do it right and park in the right places. As has been said there’s other jobs where you can be away but your not working 24/7 just because your not at home. For some they go tramping because you can get more hours in without burning yourself ourself and having to commute. Some just prefer to go to be able to go further than a set radius from base. Personally I wouldn’t go tramping again but it certainly ain’t all bad.
Like beefy posted before, you get about more, I do day work sometimes, yard work for a week or sometimes disappear for a few weeks. Get put up in hotels sometimes if parked for a few days etc. Different strokes for different blokes not everyone needs the extra £25 to survive, some people just like seeing the world more then 4.5hrs drive from the yard and an extra £25 is something in my case to spend on my car hobby.

I live there. Right up on the North Coast near Ballycastle and Bushmills(where the best whiskey is made ). No where else I’d rather be .

5 out of 10 for that,…but I’ll indulge you anyhow.
On the whole I would say a tramper and a day man do about the same amount of hours a day…well they do at my place anyway.
I’ve never known a tramper (who has done it for a long time) having to be initiially forced to do it, so it can not be all bad, it does not suit everyone, and each to his own.
It is as good or as bad as YOU make it.
I could easily change your question into this.
Just imagine having to get up at home at some ungodly hour for an early start on days, an hour and a half before start time, for maybe an hour’s commute, then having to do a max 15 hour day, to get back to yard to do another 2 hours total commuting (return trip)…AND within your 9 hour rest period …just to start the whole drudge over again next morning.
I’d rather have a decent nights kip in the bunk (pocketing 25 notes) and be on the job to start next morning after more than likely having a pleasant evening over a meal the night before, rather than rushing my arse off to get back home to …(‘‘me own bed’’
) just to rush back in the morning to start all over again.
Nah, I’ll stick to tramping thanks.
For some its a choice. I like getting about and seeing different places as you can see. I wouldnt cover Milan or Barcelona and back in a day, much rather go Manchester and back instead
Most people pay to go sightseeing. I get paid to go.
Beefy The nearest I get to you is Coleraine shopping centre. Always like my trips out there.
The ones who are getting to go into Europe, different places looks like a good crack Fairplay , but living like a cab rat in the tin can parking on the same ind estates and eating pot noodles and being the security guard for the night all for a measley 25 sheets f that

Yep, it is/was a good crack, although in most cases the Euro job is ■■■■ ed these days.
Could not agree more on your second point… sounds like purgatory.
