Snooper Truckmate satnav

Anyone use one of these? Are they any good? I’ve been using TomTom products for several years now but they are of course intended for use in cars (which don’t usually have problems with weight limits, low bridges etc), so I’m considering treating myself to a shiny new toy. But it’s quite a lot of money to splash out only to discover that the thing is pants. So, any views?

buy a tomtom go 530 or similar with an sd card slot and im sure someone on here will tell you how to put tomtom truck on it. that comes with weight/height/length etc on it and save you some serious money

There is an update to the tomtom that includes a special map for trucks and the option to enter vehicle dimensions which will the divert you away from places your vehicle will not fit.

I use a Snooper and have banished Tom Tom from our house.
You enter height width and weight including axle weight’s and it will work out the best route, the features on these things are miles ahead of the competition. The Speed camera detector will show you the different types of cameras that are on your route and will warn of them with plenty of notice. I have a mate who also runs a Snooper and he won’t go back to Garmin which he has used for years.

The cost of them is the only thing that puts most people off but if you buy one you will not be dissapointed. If you buy one new just take out the free updates for life thingy and you will never have to buy another sat nav.

tomtom truck does all that for alot less dough

Gezt,
The Tom Tom may do that for less dough but the original post asked for opinions on the Snooper sat navs, he obviously has the money to buy one and I am just giving my penny’s worth.

I cannot personally be bothered to sit for hours loading this and that on a Sat Nav when I’m on my time off to save a few £££’s.

Just looked quickly online and found a 530 for £200 and the truck software for £60. I bought my Snooper S600 for £200 with Euro maps !!

no worries mate . i already had a 520 and someone put truck on a card ,took 1/2 hour but you pays your money and makes your choice

Thanks for the info re patching a TT x20 to use the TomTom truck maps. Sadly, I only have a Go510 (and a Tt One as emergency back-up  which will not work with the TT truck software (as I understand it, at any rate).

I am familiar with TomTom products, and was really hoping to get some user opinions on the Snooper kit to make some sort of comparison.

to be honest any truck specific sat nav will allow you to adjust the height weight and width whether the route you want has hgv data on the map is another matter
from what ive heard the snooper is good unit but i think its well over priced compared to other units

what are you using now a pnd or pda

Been using a Snooper Truckmate for the last 3 weeks. Fantastic bit of kit. Nary a foot wrong!!

Only minor niggle: Thinks there is a 7.5 tonne weight limit on the A16 at Market Deeping, Lincs and tries to send us via Spalding when coming back to the farm! May be due to the proximity of the old road through the town, which is 7.5 tonne limited.

One of the best features, given the weird and wonderful places we get to pick up from, is the “Navigate to a point on the map” feature…very useful!

Considering the price of the latest Garmin, & Tom Tom units, I did not find £237 to be that expensive. Seems to be very solidly made, and the windscreen mount is the best I have seen yet!

Cheers,

Simon

im thinking of getting one of these myself some times my garmin sends me into some silly places and non existant addresses. i trust the snooper doesn’t do this? also will it work from a 12v or 24v socket?

I cannot possibly say that it will never lead you down the wrong road. But I can say that, so far, mine has yet to put a foot wrong.

The power supply is for 12/24 volts.

well if it goes one day without serving you up two wrong’uns then it would be an improvement over mine so far

I thought they all did that? My TomToms certainly do. at any rate.

My main satnav is a TomTom Go510, but I also have a TomTom One in my bag as back-up (for when the Go falls victim to the flash memory bug that means it loses some of its settings). If the One failed, I could always use the GPS/mapping program on my iPhone

Maybe so…Never had a Tom Tom; Or, until now, any other kind come to that. So; I have no axe to grind re: any particular make.

He was specifically asking about the Truckmate and I merely noted that I find this a very useful feature.

Cheers,

Simon
