local council officers are the only people that can issue a penalty for smoking
I’m thinking that a driver gets back to base and the boss gets told that the driver has been smoking in the cab at some point in the day.
The driver says that he has but cannot ‘remember’ in which county it was
Can a council penalty be given where he is based if the ‘offence’ was in another county
A good point
Something else I will say. Smoking is an addiction,so being denied access to the addiction may cause problems . Including stress levels and anxiety which in a truck drivers case could lead to loss of concentration.
However we know that smokers can drive at the same level as non smokers.
So the smoking truck driver , who is forced to go without during driving and is in no way affecting others around him is in a different situation to an office worker, who can pop outside.
It would not be practical for a smoking truck driver to keep stopping for a ■■■ break as the load may take some time to get there.
This is not the same as other drugs, smoking ciggies does not affect your ability to drive but is in itself a major addiction and with all addictions there are withdrawal symtons which must be treated with suitable alternatives or the original method of dosage.
Nicotine replacement therapy may not work, the smoker may not want to give up the addiction. I could go on but I need a ciggy
MADBAZ:
Smoking in the cab is disgusting, the smokers shouldn’t be allowed in this industry, and smoking and driving is just downright dangerous. Their are patches etc available, there is no excuses for it.

I’m told you can get patches these days for ‘lack of tolerance’ too There is no excuse for it, you know

Blimey, another divisive thread. I don’t smoke and they do stink in an enclosed space like a cab . As for them causing untold carnage on the road due to inattentive, smoking, PROFFESIONAL, EXPERIENCED, hgv/lgv drivers i’m not convinced. Using the mobile phone analogy, i personally, never had any accidents or near misses while using a hand held phone. I believe we already have sufficient laws to cover this i.e. driving without due care & dangerous driving. I also agree , once again, with little enis about the messy bleeders that lob the used tab ends on the deck . My missus does this and it drives me bloody spare !!

I won’t get drunk and start a fight or attempt to drive because I don’t drink.
I don’t get to go out and have a life because I haven’t the energy.
I will be taking myself off to Switzerland to get put down long before I get lung cancer.
Smoking is the only “vice” I have left which my consultant permits me to indulge in. I don’t need an excuse.
I like smoking. Therefore I don’t intend to stop. If you don’t like it, I won’t let you in my cab. Job sorted.
