Hi, just wondering if there are any lady skip drivers on here? I’d like to know if it’s very physical, does it involve climbing on the back much etc etc? Thanks
Nothing much physical with skips, netting them and putting the eyelets onto the skip hooks is about the worst of it (but I only did it for a couple of days as I was relieving the regular guy coz my ejector work had gone quiet that week)
Maybe someone with more experience will counteract what I said, which I’ll gladly defer to.
I’m female and have done quite a lot of skip work in the past and it can be physical if you want it to be. You can climb on the back to net the skip, but all the health and safety nonsense tells you to net it while its on the floor anyway, so you shouldn’t really be climbing up on top of it. It can be a good job once you get used to the smell and the rats!

Yeah I was taught to net them on the ground before attaching the chains so that’s what I did, the only time I can remember climbing on the back of the lorry was if something needed repositioning if it had moved or something like that.
Once you have an 8yd or 16yd on the back, then there isn’t much room to move about up on top so best to avoid climbing up if you can. If you can get an enclosed skip, then all the better
I’ve not done it either, but guess it may suit a female better than a man, as I’d assume it requires a bit of public relations!
I’d guess that domestic deliveries and collections can be a bit tricky with hazards, tight little roads and generally holding up the general public trying to get Tarquin to school.
Go for it and see what you think!

And don’t forget pretty much everyone want’s the skip on their driveway, that can be challenging to say the least!

As far as i’m aware it has to be unless they get a permit for the road, so i’m sure that can get interesting when you arrive at a place and see that there is not a chance of getting it on the drive. Again, I think a female could generally handle dealing with the dipstick public better in these scenario’s.
I hope we aren’t putting the OP off!

I’m not a lady, but there are 3 I see regular on skips near me. It’s more of a test of your driving skill, than your physical skill…

Letch!
Skips is a brilliant job if you like a challenge, it’s not physical as such but sometimes when skips get stuck inside one another it takes some brute force! I only came off skips because I did the elite licence!
I say go for it!!

No. Just observant
Thanks everyone for your comments, much appreciated.
I think I will go for it. I did a stint on a tipper, which I did find quite physical at times, as I had to climb into the back to dust out before loading with tarmac as I couldn’t fling the dust on far enough from the ground so I had to chuck ten shovel loads onto the back then climb up the side and drop down into the back and cover the bed until I got near enough to the back to be able to fling the rest on from the ground. I might have bitten off a bit more than I could chew going from a 7.5 tonner to an 8 wheeler but I did enjoy it. I hope I can get on with skips!
Some of the places people expect you to be able to put a skip is hysterical. But the worst part of skips is when the weather is crappy and you’re stuck outside trying to untangle the net from the nails/screws in pieces of wood or my nemesis, brambles!, and just as you get one bit free, another bit decides to attach itself. But all in all, it’s decent work and if it wasn’t for health reasons, I’d still be out there. I used to get the occasional tip too, (especially at Christmas). Couple of tips for you, 1. don’t forget your blocks to put under the jacks if you’re delivering to residential. It’s a nightmare when your jacks go straight through the tarmac on some ones driveway and 2. don’t put up with greedy boards, level load means level load. If you have a cross bar on the lifting gear, lower it and reverse to scrape the top layer of crap off the skip onto the floor behind the skip!

Is this acceptable?
There’s some skill involved there! 10cu yd of waste in a 4 yd midi skip, priceless!

That’s someone who played a lot of Tetris as a child!
Do skips generally speaking have onboard weighing equipment?
