Kenny Rayment. Now he was a character! Always bought Mercs, and usually the most powerful available at the time. Dont know if he’s still about, although I did see one of his trucks recently (I assume it was his). Heard he’d had a heart attack a few years back. When I decided to set up as an O/D back in the 80’s,I tried to buy one of his old SK’s from Fengate Commercials, but word got back to my then employers, and resulted in me getting suspended (with pay). Never touched a Merc since!

some cracking pictures there! when i worked for n c cammacks they had 2 of them, a eurocab and just a 6 wheeler v8 local motor on about a h plate i think, they just kept soldering on and they went to auction 1 or 2 years ago, and the h reg which was very knackered indeed (gearbox display didnt work rusty mega miles) still fetched about 8 grand!! most of them go to africa where im told the gearboxes are removed an replaced with zf itms (normally) as they are more mechanical and less electrical, and they solder on! i will see if i have any pictures of them

also l e tuckwells who are round the corner from me sold their yard shunter which i believe was a v8 for over a grand, and it didnt have a floor left!!

was that the red LHD euro cab one Mat ?
i remember meeting him on my side of the road top of baythorne end :open_mouth: one monday morning :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

I’ve heard that too vernonbish. IIRC, I read something to that effect in one of the trucking mags when they did an article on Acheson Topeka.
IIRC, It said in there that he has a thing for US railways.
TBF, he runs a clean and tidy fleet.

I use to Live in a L-reg 2544ls Merc for 5months with my dad

Hi dreva, The first EPS I saw was a ‘demo’ 1635 on a “D” plate.
Our boss took the demo the minute it came out, because he was looking to replace the fleet at that time.
I remember being sent to Puttock’s of Guildford (Merc dealer) to learn the EPS gearbox.

  Does anybody remember the cassette that told you how to use the EPS gearbox.■■ :grimacing:

The one with “Ain’t seen nothing yet”, as the soundtrack?!

Yep, that’s the one :exclamation:

It was supposed to be a driver explaining the EPS box to his pal in a cafe. Rather naff IIRC.:grimacing:

Hi dreva, I found a pic of the first EPS.:grimacing:
This is a demo from Puttocks of Guildford and I took the pic at a groupage place on River Road, Barking.

Defo on a “D” as you can see:

I dont want to step on any toes but my dad drove a b-reg 1633 which was fitted with a EPS I dont know if it was bought in the UK as the owner was a Dutchman and all his motors were dutch spec.

Is this possible?

I’d say that’s fairly unlikely, because the 1633s I drove all had the ZF 16-speed manual gearbox.

I guess it’s possible that time plays tricks with our memory, but the firm I was on at the time was all Merc, and I’m certain that the EPS came out in the UK on a ‘D’ plate like on my pic above. I did many trips in various “Y,” “B,” “C” and “D” reg 1633s and they all had the 16-speed manual gearbox.

Also from my pic, you can see that the truck had EPS and that it was a 1635.

Maybe your dad’s memory has changed a “B” for a “D”■■
Maybe the Dutchman had made an EPS fit a manual gearbox had failed, or maybe he’d got hold of an early prototype??

I tend to agree with dieseldave, the firm i used to work for had one of the last 33s on a C plate, and one of the first 35s on a D plate. I suppose someone may have fitted an EPS box in a 33.
