Billy the gib i think we used to call him, did you get my pm??
tidy pictures mark. I would of loved to have a go of a 1644. W.G Foulkes used to have a couple. The bossess sons Russell and Peter used to drive them. When I was In school we used to see them on their way to fiddlers ferry powerstation with coal from point of ayr colliry. they used to effortlessly climb northop road hill out of flint. whilst williams brothers (wales) 2800 dafs would be way behind. them were the days!! Now that is sad!!! you had to be there to capture the scene!!
The photo of the three Mercedes Powerliners was taken by Mercedes own photographer and was used in Truck magazine. A friend of mine drove the lorry on the left ( A Wood & Sons ) and was given a copy of the original, i myself drove D911 LKP some time later. I ve driven more Mercs than i care to remember over the years , in fact i,ve got one now a new Actros Megaspace.
Hi acd1202, I’m going from memory with this, because I don’t have any reference books.
acd1202:
The SK was the last version of the “New Generation” range. That cab shape came out in Germany in 1973, but didn’t turn up here until 1975 the first demonstrators were N reg. The first facelift was NG2. After that it was known as powerliner, then powerliner 2 and the last facelift was SK in 1995 until Actros came out in 1998.
I wouldn’t argue with your info on cab shape, it seems to be right to me. I think the letters “SK” relate to the chassis, like the “B” designation. IIRC, “SK” means Sattelkraftfahrzeug, which means generally “artic” in English. I also seem to remember that manufacturers sold you a shortened rigid, which had the fifth wheel fitted later. I’m fairly sure that “SK” was merc’s designation for the “shortened” rigid.
acd1202:
The half sleeper cab was designated M for mittel, the day cab being S and the full sleeper L, then the full width cab which came out much later was G for grossraum.
That seems to be my memory of it too, but do you know what the letters “S” and “L” stand for please??
The original German words would do just fine.
( HELP! I can’t remember.
)
I do remember that the “G” is for “Großraum” or “full-width” that tended to be on the 440hp German motors.
acd1202:
B means that when it left the factory it was intended to become a concrete mixer.
Seems we all remember that one, cos Andyroo was quickly onto that too.
acd1202:
Sad isn’t it.
No!
Andyroo was quickly into his referance books more like, I didn’t know it before…I might have been able to have a guess but I didn’t know it.

Hi Andyroo, IMHO, reference book info is good info.
The people who write them are usually well-informed.
I have to rely on memory, having been around at the time, but like any other human being, my memory is fallible.
BTW, what does your book say about “SK” or “L” or “S”■■
I’ll have another look later, armed with what’s been added to the thread since.
saw this beauty on deeside industrial estate. it pulls an aston martin racing car in a box trailer. I asked him to sell it to me but he was having none of it. Its absolutly mint.
