I’ve been informed I have one next week ,would 6 hrs be a normal length of time for one ,what do they consist of .ta
If it’s DHL then that sounds about right, they will want to start you off with a manual handling course to retrieve your coffee from the vending machine before putting you with a really boring old bloke who will lecture you for half an hour on the 3 points of contact rule and tell you how to use a new fangled digital tachograph like they’ve just been invented before you actually get down to business and do his job for him for the next 6hrs. I won’t work for DHL…unless it’s subcontracting.

Thanks Kiowan ,it’s not dhl ,my boss rang me and asked if I could do a site induction next Monday ,said it was apx 6 hrs in duration which as I assumed it was just h&is seemed along time too me ,which is why I asked what was it all about ( my rota day off so didn’t want a long day )
He was very vague with his information ,didn’t know who it was ,where it was ,what time I had to be there etc ,he said he would come back to me with all this info in due course ,said he was just confirming I could attend on that day .
Rule No1 at inductions… Keep your gob shut.
As there’s always some bloke who’ll ask rediculous questions to the instructor and the day drags on, and on, and on. Where as if you shut up and listen, the instructor will plough through as fast as possible so they can finish early. So the 6hrs could in fact be 3-4hrs.
But if the gobby bloke won’t shut up it’ll drag out to the full 6hrs
Rule no 2, don’t go telling them all the ■■■■■ you have been posting here about all that goes wrong in your daily working life, you won’t last very long. If they do ask you for tea and biccies, it isn’t a compliment……

They must know you doze, so I reckon 6 hrs is about right, it’s normally half an hour.
Do you set yourself up on here on purpose bud or what?
6hrs …
That’ll be 1hr for the induction and 5hrs to fill the accident reports and damage claims he’ll cause while onsite …

Very harsh,…but fair.

Have we been on a induction together at some point?

So one of the bosses pets says ,it induction on site where we’re going to pick all this concrete, steel etc up from ,he thinks mine will be 6 hrs as I’ve not done the training on strapping they have ( I was on hols ).
He was going on about if you’ve a 20 ton load you don’t use 4x5 ton straps ,you use 10 ,or that’s what they’ve been told ,over strap
I assumed it was all pre-strapped so I’m kinda going off this job ,

the birch was far better than the strap so I have been told, and it all depends if your the recipient of the strap taker not a giver, again from what I have been told, and if its a 20 ton load well say no more
Remember the induction course I had to do when I did some agency work delivering stuff on thetford army base where they do live ammo training and all the proper real life exercises.
Walked into the office, met the sgt major or whichever rank he was. Really pleasant down to earth guy.
Said he wouldn’t make me sit through the hour long video, just made me promise that I wouldn’t pick up any ammo I came across and to leave anything that looked like a grenade alone. And never to go past a red flag as it meant live ammo was being used past that point.
Other than that he just said to enjoy the scenery! Replica German villages from ww2 training, replica of down town Baghdad I got to drive a truck round, air strips, tank training. Was great fun.
They filmed a lot of Dads Army on there as well, recognise a lot of it from the show.
Seriously - securing concrete and steel is different to strapping pallet of beans. Pay attention to what they say and follow the instructions exactly. The consequences of getting it wrong can be pretty bad.
I might be wrong (probably am) but I thought that a 5 ton breaking strain strap, should be used to secure a load of 1/3 of the breaking strain. So if you have 20 tons to restrain, you should be looking at 12 straps, which would total 60 tons of breaking strain.
I await to be corrected!
Strap your own load ? no wonder you’re starting to go off the job. It’s the thin end of the wedge mate, before long they will want you to take the straps off at the other end as well.
Walk away mate, too many employers taking the ■■■■ and expecting drivers to work for a living.
Regards. John.
I remember my first load of concrete stuff, the induction consisted of ‘ok driver your done now f off’.
Protect your straps on sharp / abrasive edges is my best tip, nothing worse than going flat on your arse whena strap breaks. Then again in this world of elf and safety gone mad suppose these rules about climbing on the load now.

Where I’m at it is a day and a half which the trainer is trying to get increased to 2 days. 8hrs sat in a room suffering death by powerpoint as they go through absolutely everything possible including how to drive their new DAFs how they want them driven then half a day on site going over procedures there with a short driving test.
Well worth it though as the company is brilliant to work for, the best I’ve ever been to, and its a paid induction as well.
Conor:

Id bloody well hope so if they want you there for a day and a half!
