"Site Induction" DCPC

I’m a bit annoyed about something that happened yesterday so I thought I’d air my grievance here.

I did a few years with an agency a while ago and despite the way agencies can be I was always happy with them and got on well. They gave me my first go with Class1, more work followed and I ended up in a spot I was very happy with.

Now it is a few years later and I could do with a few shifts to supplement a quiet period in my usual work.

I thought, why ring round a bunch of agencies when I can give them a call and get back on one of the old contracts.

So I went to re-register yesterday, and of course I will need to do an assessment to make sure I can drive a lorry.

Fine.

If the assessment goes well I will have to attend the following day to do a site induction, this will only cost me £50.

But the good news is that it counts as 7 hrs to my DCPC.

I appreciate the DCPC is here to stay and have no issue with that (well… not much) but if I am going to undertake mandatory training (at my expense) I intend to do courses which will benefit me, maybe Moffet, ADR, First Aid, Refresh my HIAB etc.

So here’s the thing.

My license is currently valid, but I am being told I must hand over £50 for an “induction” course if I want to work.

I have never paid to work, and on principle do not intend to.

Looks like I will have to ring round after all, but really, I find it depressing.
A mock test I have already passed, followed by mock training I have pay for.

But its no problem they told me, its not like I have to pay up front… they will simply take it out of my first weeks wages.

Thats OK then.

Name and shame…good for you not getting had but it would help others avoid the rogues if we knew who they were.

I’ve heard of this before and I’ve got a feeling it’ll be Pertemps.

They want you to pay £50 to do a site induction, DCPC approved or not that’s appalling :open_mouth:

I agree with DrivingMissDaisy, they should be named and shamed.

Is there any guarantee of hours per week or a temp to perm contract for the company? It seems a bit wrong to pay someone to be shown around.

Priceless. What next? You pay to work? Put diesel in the truck? Buy the boss lunch?

I can’t believe that crap… you pay to do an induction, with no guarantee of work. Jeeeeesus wept. I won’t do any inductions that I am not paid for.

Surely this represents Fraud outright?

AN induction is to show you the job. You don’t pay for that - ever.

I’d like to see the names of the crooks requesting what amounts to “bribes” to get posted to a customer as well.

The nearest I’ve ever experienced to “paying”, was a couple of years back being asked to work the first two days for free, as it’s a two day induction.
I told them I already had a licence, and wasn’t trying to get a job having just walked out of the scrubs on my “going straight” campaign. I resent all the filled in forms and day taken off work with this kind of bull from so-called agency consultants…

I would imagine that “working for free” also means they won’t be bothering paying any money as insurance either. So if you have an accident, you have no cover. If you kill someone, you’ll be designated “an intruder on the premises, exceeding their training whilst no one was in attendence to supervise”.

I did a 3hr** “site” induction (walk round the yard, sign papers etc) yesterday, no driving req`d
BUT at least they paid me 4hrs for attending.

** it shouldve been 2hrs but a couple of other drivers with me wouldnt shut the [zb] up talking, instead of listening & it dragged out to 3hrs

What would the driver get for £50 if they already had a DQC and no more dcpc hours will count ?

I’m inclined to agreed with that. They’ll just sign off the hours in return for the cash.

Don’t know.
Really.
I could have said I don’t want the hours towards DCPC.
Very happy to do the induction for free.
Interesting to see what they’d say to that.
Not really the reason the DCPC was introduced though is it?
Generating leverage for agencies to extort workers.

Laughable the pile of driver hours/WTD questions, disclaimer forms and arse covering declarations to sign.
Only, it seems as a driver is so much responsibility heaped upon you in return for so little regard.
Goes without saying that if anything goes wrong it’ll be down to you.
I’ve been driving a while and have always accepted that.
Still, when the wages are the same as 5 or more years ago, the pay is fast declining in real terms.
Today a portion of those wages must go to folk who run training courses.
In some cases the wages end up with people who SAY they run training courses.
Can sometimes seem that classroom training and driver agencies benefit more from the industry than they contribute to it.
Surely that couldn’t be the case though, or there wouldn’t be so many of 'em!

:sunglasses:

Employers charging you a fee to work is illegal in this country and that is what they are doing. Personally I’d be pointing that out and reporting them.

Unless the site you’re going to is a JAUPT authorised training centre then the 7hrs won’t count towards the DCPC.

We need names

In the quiet words of the Virgin Mary

Come again.

They want you to pay for an induction you need to have to work for them?

Like ■■■■

The sad fact, if this is true is a newbie or someone lacking nous will pay.

We need names, what if you had your DQC already? Sounds like a scam.

FFS man cough the name up will ya■■?

That looks like a good deal to me,and you have turned your nose up at it.The offer of 7 hours DCPC for £50.00 is better than most are getting. You have to make absolutely sure that the course is JAUPT approved and that the upload fee is included. If those conditions are not being met the agency are acting in an illegal manner and should be reported to the police.
