Side lights.or no lights

Suedehead:
Luckily I could pull back in without causing problems …

Why did you pull out in the first place then ?
[/quote]

It is perfectly legal to drive with just sidelights on in the middle of the night in a 30 zone with street lights.

Sorry your wrong on this one , its never legal to drive on side lights, anywhere.

Make sure you can back up what your saying

You MUST

  • ensure all sidelights and rear registration plate lights are lit between sunset and sunrise
  • use headlights at night, except on a road which has lit street lighting. These roads are generally restricted to a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) unless otherwise specified
  • use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226)

Night (the hours of darkness) is defined as the period between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise).

[Laws RVLR regs 3, 24, & 25, (In Scotland - RTRA 1984 sect 82 (as amended by NRSWA, para 59 of sched :sunglasses:)]

Steve,
Where did you get that (regs) quote from? I was fairly sure that that was amended quite a few years ago.

Deathstar:
You would think that vehicle construction regulations would make it impossible for this situation to arise.Surely with the ignition off they should default to sidelights only and when the engine is running they should default to full headlights.

On my Vectra, when you turn the ignition off the headlights do just that… :sunglasses:
On the Renault Premium, how many who drive them know that there is a setting for daytime running lights

Yes,when the ignition is turned off the lights default to sidelights so as to save the battery, but it ought to be possible to wire the vehicle so it is impossible for it to be driven with anything other than full headlights. Also it should not be possible to drive with sidelights and front fog lights.

The direct.gov site. I would like to think that site is up to date

Front “fog-Lights” some say they are “driving” lights, they are not,  HATE THEM!!! some cars they actually look like they got lights on full beam and it dazzles you.

Rear “fogs” on I give them a little flash of the Main beam see if they spot it, if they dont I leave them on for a minute, they usually realise and switch off. So who actually knows what MINIMUM visibility the Highway code/common sense says put them on■■?

Visibility of less than 100 metres for front or rear fog lamps day or night. This is one of my pet hates front fog lights being used in good weather, this is technically a fixed penalty offence i often see some lorry drivers using them also.I do most of my driving during the hours of darkness and I find it difficult to see past the on-coming vehicle that is using them, but do plod nick anyone for it? we all know the answer to that one.

Ok so I,m wrong on the law ,but common sense tells me when to use headlights, and in this case the law certainly is the proverbial ■■■,.
If I had,nt seen your kids because I didnt have my heads on, and ran over them you would,nt be best pleased would you.

Bit of an interesting point is this one as it could be UNSAFE

My area has 2 sorts of streetlamps - the normal high bright sort and the lower low sodium (I think) sort which reminds me of a scene from a horror movie as the light from them is so poor.

If an incident was to occur in the horror zone lighting area and the vehicle was on side lights only then, although LEGAL, it would deffo be UNSAFE and I would expect the driver to recieve a penalty.

What penalty that would be I do not know but could guess at being something like the penalty for not have the correct lights on for the conditions… ■■?

Careless driving perhaps? Code CD20 - Driving without reasonable consideration for other road users.

Whatever the law says, from dusk until dawn I like to see and be seen.

Wheel Nut:
I had an Audi 100 donkeys years ago and if you put the right hand indicator on when the ignition was off, it lit one side of the car up, Golfs had it too, though not sure if they still have it, a good idea in theory though

I think Vauxhalls had this also. Though there is no legal use for them in this country. A vehicle, when parked during the hours of darkness, either needs to be illuminated or it doesn’t, there is no provision for being 1/2 lit.

It is indeed quite legal to drive on side lights on a road with street lamps where the limit is 30 .

Headlights in towns cause a lot of reflections especially in the wet. Just notice next time you’re a pedestrian. The “dim dip” 1/2 power headlights that used to come on automatically when the side lamps were on and the engine running were excellent.
Many Fords were fitted with this system in the 80’s - early 90’s. Had to be dropped because… wouldn’t you guess it, didn’t fit in with European regulations.

Use of front or rear fogs is only legal when visibility is reduced to less than 100 metres by fog, falling snow or heavy spray.

How many vehicles do you see parked in towns at night facing the wrong way? Illegal!
It is also illegal to have headlights on when parked.

Now that really does get on my goat, people parked on the wrong side of the road with their headlights on :imp:

Also the invisible silver car in the fog or heavy rain, surely it would be simple enough to wire up the headlights to the wiper stalk, when you put the wipers on, the headlights come on too :bulb:

At this time of year I drive with dipped on all the time, car and truck, it also makes a difference esp when you need to pinch a bit of the opposing lane.

I personally think with todays tech in cars when the wipers are on the dipped should come on automatically (Newmerc beat me to it), and If fogs (front or rear) are on then the vehicle should be electronically limited to 40mph.

Sidelights are a curious invention;
“I want to be seen, but only a little bit”

Either on or off IMO. Hate the muppets who will put their fog lights on as soon as they see a wisp of fog over the hedge, yet won’t put their headlights on when its ■■■■■■■ down during the day. Its like they only think headlights are only to be put on when it is ‘officially dark’.

What surprises me is the size of rear lights on a truck, given the size of the vehicle they are proportionally smaller to those on a car, and many of the ones I see are so poorly lit they serve little purpose.Buses have improved over the years with L.E.D.'s commonplace but trucks are stuck in the dark ages.No pun intended.

The problem I have these days is fog lights, or ‘driving lights’ as they are called. Often they look just like fog lights and some cars even have their rear fogs on at the same time. Drivers probably think they are cool by using them. Often used with side lights, a tiny pinprick of lights above the fogs.

And they use them in cities and towns were there is adequet street lighting.

If cars are going to have lights on, dipped headlights. As Volvo do with their cars. Daytime Running Lights. Not pseudeo-cool-looking-foglights!

Grr.

Mr Saratoga. Very observant! Volvo (and Saab) dropped the day notice running lights way over 10 years ago at a guesss. They now run with headlights on.

■■■■■■■ hate fogs lights ! if i ever came into power i would give the police full power to pull people over and shoot there fog lamps to pieces with a shot gun, just so they dont drive round with them on again.
How retarded must you be to not understand what they are for

I’M A ■■■■■■!!!

use irish lads have them on all the time to show off all the lights on the cab lol
