Sad times for the industry, for all industry come to that but things are not going to get better pay rate wise for many years I reckon, while there is this recession so many people are signing up to train on LGV’s paid for by the jobcentres (only class 2 I think) that as soon as any jobs become available these newbies are going to be the pick simply because they will work for min wage, I have an old mate just like you and me and many on here, he was made redundant before Christmas, many years behind the wheel national and international with ADR/crane licence/flt licence, he started a job two weeks ago delivering prescriptions for a chemist at £6 an hour, the best he had been offered since Christmas was a class 1 one job UK with nights out at £6.50 and hour and £15 a night out, the chemist gives him 40 hours a week, start at 8.30 then his day is split and he finishes at 7pm, Mon - Fri driving around in a little transit connect, no VOSA no cops no tacho no spending the night is a p!ss stinking service area with crappy smelly dirty showers - what would you do?
yea its bad, i feel like leaving the game altogether for a while, best ive been offered is a drivers mate position int he last 2 weeks for a removals firm.

If not turn down the volume mate, Capital letters on a forum mean you are shouting
I got a job six weeks ago driving a 4.5t van for 7 quid and hour - I feel fortunate to have a job to be honest. The company I work for pay overtime and shift allowances, which seems like like a good deal compared to some.
My agency is getting dicked by the client who is canceling shifts for us with 2 hrs notice: The client tries to extra task us ‘will-do’ type drivers outside the agency’s knowledge when we’re lucky to be on a job too. On top of that chaos, we are getting a £1/hr pay cut soon - so it seems the big companies are laughing their parts-off as the agency and we have to take the flak sincewe can all be replaced by other sharks in the water.
It’s certainly ugly at what to do for the right outcome without shafting other drivers or oneself …so maybe it’s bye-bye to the days of cheerful ‘good mornings’, ‘pushing limits’ & being overly helpful for the hapless clerk on the desk?
Britain, Britain, Britain …where we’re told to applaud ‘diversity’ yet suffer shed-loads because of it…
Thinks: Maybe soon drop the ‘Happy’ & change it to ‘Jobsworth’?
I was bantering with a Polish shunter in Milton Keynes (MK) last night who told me that a Class One Polish mate of his is working for an agency servicing MK Tesco RDC for £7.50 p/h days & £8.50 p/h nights.
What I can’t understand-not only in UK or Australia-that there is a shortage of quality operators, before this credit crunch came along.
So every other proffesion/trade/unskilled vocation that could not get employees raised their wages-except for trucking!?!?
Then, how convenient when the credit crunch started-trucking is the first occupation to droptheir wages/rates?!?!?
I was taking home more $$ 10 years ago when house prices were lower, cost of living etc and then the big trucking companies have the gall to complain they can’t get staff!!
But,the best for last,I love the push for full auto gearbox trucks to attract new people to the industry.
