I’ve been at this company since October and we get an ‘attendance allowance’ of £25 a week which helps make up the low hourly rate, but many drivers said they have had it taken off them for not getting paperwork signed etc.
I said “the first time they take it off me I’m gone”… so today I had to give my notice.
I forgot to collect a cheque from a customer for £124, it was collected the day after by another driver, but I still lost my ‘bonus’, because that’s how much some companies think their drivers are worth.
It would be nice to think that some of the other drivers would have stood up to them, but no, just me, so once again, my principles have cost me.
The transport manager walked last week and three drivers have gone since I’ve been there, so maybe I’m being unfair, and others have stood up to them and had to leave.
Is the £25 a week in effect paid as a bonus for doing the job correctly? Sounds like it to me as otherwise they would just slap the 25 quid onto the hourly rate. If so, and as you freely admit you made a mistake, I would take it on the chin.
It’s not like the company seem to be looking for any and all reasons to take it off people, the ‘rules of the game’ seem quite clear from what you have said.
You call it an attendance allowance so what has it got to do with getting paperwork done, surely an attendance allowance is for attending regularly and on time
What agreement is there with the company about this allowance/bonus ?

Call me old fashioned, but isn’t that what you’re supposed to do anyway? Surely if I wasn’t in the habit of turning up, and on time, then I could expect nothing more than a P45!
The last thing I would expect is a 25-quid pat on the back in the weeks when I can be bothered turning up!

Sure but that doesn’t stop companies giving an attendance bonus and some do.
Maybe I’ve misunderstood, so perhaps you would like to explain what an attendance allowance is so we’re all talking about the same thing ?
FH16Globetrotter:
Depends on the circumstances I suppose.

They use it’s removal as a threat for the smallest mistake by all accounts, and yes I made a mistake, but they got the cheque the day after, and they certainly don’t financially penalise office staff for mistakes as far as I know.
It says attendance allowance on the wage slip, but they call it a bonus when they threaten to take it off you for a long list of things.
I never blob and I’m never late, so my attendance is excellent (never claimed benefits either carryfast), but the £25 makes a big difference to a low hourly rate and if it was knocked off regularly it would make the job not worth doing.
When I was at Tuffnells back in 08, the weekly wage was (C1 Multidrop) £50 per day plus £10 attendance bonus and £10 performance bonus, total of £350 week. The performance bonus could be lost for bringing back over a certain percentage of your drops per day, and the attendance bonus could be lost for being more than 5mins late. Whwn I used to query that the daily wage on its own was less than NMW for the hours I was working, the line “No its not, you forgot to add on your bonus, its part of your wage” would be trotted out. But be late in, or have a crap day and bring too much back, and suddenly it wasn’t part of your wage, and they could take it away if they wanted.
On a side note, has anyone else worked at Tuffnells? Just wondering what the deal was with their C&D Mobility Allowance? Always seemed a bit dodgy to me, gross £350 in a week, take home £320 with the dodgy allowance.
ive been running a trailer load of stuff into a courier company recently that have a sign on the noitice board…
it reads.
ANY DRIVER NOT SUBMITTING CORRECT PAPERWORK WILL BE FINED £25!!!
i wonder how much duff paperwork they get now■■?
My old depot used to get the same £25/wk (and they still do) but was paid on your start date anniverary so was about £1200/annum, but it went on attendance (more of a retainer) and nothing to do with completing paperwork 100% or turning up half hour late everyday or collecting money…some of the others would come back with over 2k in tenners and if it was short, they had cough up outta there own money but it didn’t affect the bonus. Me…wouldn’t collect cash for that reason and would get the rep to do it…that used to stop his afternoon shenanigans
thought you of all people would have learnt when it’s appropriate to gob off or not.BTW Mick, monthly bonus of $500 for getting things right here, have it all the time.Don’t you wish you had stayed

Does that apply to office staff who make minor mistakes as well, or just numpty drivers?

I’d already said we should not really have to ask for cheques after getting a boloxing for asking a customer for a cheque before tipping anything (as instructed), and upsetting a good customer who always brings the cheque out after the load is off
It says on my wage slip…£25 ‘attendance allowance’.

I know what you are saying, but I have always had an exemplary work record, and never been unhappy in my work, it’s just the last couple of years I seem to be meeting dishonest immoral cowboy companies (and bottle less workers who daren’t say boo to a goose).
Yes I should have stayed in Canada…with a different company.
Dave55:
I think you should have stayed - more so if you were happy there. You could have always clawed back the £25 by an hour here and there.
Yes I could, but it should never have happened in my opinion.
The job is the easiest I’ve ever had (honestly), with nice challenging work driving double deckers into farms and building sites, but the hourly rate is poor, night out money was crap (£20) and the other drivers fear of losing the bonus, or being sacked was beyond belief.
