Cannot happen how will firms make money if the driver is at home for extra 2 hours, only office staff can have time off.
^^ I like your cynicism. Very true.

Over here in the USA you are only alloed to take the shorter reduced break of 8 hours in the sleeper and not at home and off duty, you must also take 2 hours at another point during the day to compensate.
I am pretty sure in the 90’s in the UK you could only reduce your brak to 9 hours away from base so the laws must have changed.

9 hours off is fine at base or away. if you live too far from base and cry about being home every night, do another job or kip in the lorry.
far too many nancy boy, can’t do, won’t do people in this job nowadays.
+1
9 hour breaks where there when they came into the game, im sure when people have 9 off up the road they don’t just ■■■■ shower and go to bed .
if that’s how you want to play it then us trampers can have 9 hours every night. we are already more productive than the stay at home boys anyway.
as someone else has said, the rules were there when most of the wingers started driving. I expect they moved next to an airport just so they can moan about the noise

Those tramping do not have to factor in travelling time which could be around 2 hours !!
Every person requires differring amounts of sleep in order to be fully safe to drive so why should those needing 8 hours kip be penalised or put in a position where they either drive unsafely or lose job ?

But they must have known that having as little as 9 hours off was a requirement when looked into becoming a driver . so if a driver needs 8 hours kip why take a job an hour from his home on that basis
NO, they’re fine as they are thank you very much. Besides I could only do it 3 times between weekly rests .
In the rare circumstance I need to have a 9 at base I’ll have it in the truck, I know that’s not an option for everyone, and I don’t always like it, but that’s the job I shook hands on. If I felt that aggrieved I’d find work closer to home and on days or i’d get a truck with my name down the side.

I agree that this issue should be addressed at interview
tachograph:
Should reduced daily rest of 9 hrs at base be abolished?
Yes, I’ve no problem with 15 hour spread-overs that finish at base, but the shortest rest period at base should be 11 hours even if it doesn’t fit into the 24 hour period.

Not feasible, start 06:00 finish 21:00 the following day you can’t start till 08:00 do another 15 and you can’t start the following day until 10:00.
What we have at the moment, good or bad works as well as it can.

Well the company could always try to plan things so you don’t have three consecutive 15 hour shifts.

I gave an example of what could happen, 9 hours between shifts is insufficient for those who travel and sufficient for those away from base, the suggestion of the OP is a good one but would be impossible to police, how would anyone looking at the tachograph records know where the break was taken.
A 9 hour break is at the discretion of the driver not the employer.
What’s all this talk of “8 hours sleep”? I’m lucky to get 4.5 hours.

But atleast you get your 9 off, i know people that dont even get that .
the law says 9 hours OFF, not 9 hours between shifts. i dont count commuting as freely disposing of my time so i dont count it as rest therefore i will not take less than 10 1/2 hours between leaving site and returning

Did I miss something in the rules? Any way why should it just be day men who get to legally have more than 9 off between shifts? As a tramper I don’t like having 9s off either, would be better if we all had 11 off every night but won’t happen any time soon.
And then if it did change, they would still be moaning because they are only getting 9 hours at home!

I think you seem to be an excemption as a tramper, most of the trampers on here seem to be more than happy with the rules as they are, me included, as a tramper
Op did say at base, therefore does not affect trampers. As has been said, how to police it?
Would the lads that do day work or are at base happily have a 9 hour daily rest on a Thursday night if it means they were finishing earlier on the Friday??

why would i want to finish earlier? i enforce this rule when it suits me to avoid shorter shifts. if i have to take a 9 to get a 12 hour shift instead of an 8 hour shift then i will waive it but i wont reduce for an 8 hour shift
