Short-term insurance for 7.5 tonner

I’m moving house from the UK to the Republic of Ireland and plan to hire a 7.5T for this purpose. So far I haven’t found a vehicle rental firm where the insurance will cover me for this journey, but I’ve found a 7.5T vehicle for hire without insurance. All I need now is someone to insure me for one short trip (7 days maximum). Any suggestions where to get this kind of insurance? I’ve tried a bunch of stuff thrown up by Google but as yet to no avail…

What was the response from your present car insurer

THey were about as helpful as a chocolate teapot!
“We don’t insure hired vehicles under any circumstances”

checked with mine and they said the same :frowning:
They did say that it HAS to be the hire company that insures the driver in this circumstance and suggested that trying a different hire company might get a result.

looks like you are going to be trawling the internet or yellow pages…

Where are you? Reason I ask is because this company say they will provide insurance providing you can get breakdown cover:

easirent.com/truck-hire.asp

Try John Peers.

Cheers guys, I’ll try Peers Insurance tomorrow, easirent is a bit far from my location in Yorkshire

I looked for your location earlier, I would nip into a HGV broker and explain the problem. He makes his money on commision, let him earn a bit

Try Ryder hire.

Rented a 7.5 tonner off them a few years ago to move neighbours to South of France.

Try Adrian Flux. They do a lot on the specialist side, particularly with kit cars and limited mileage vehicles.

You might get lucky.

For our convoys (where we take 5-10 hired 7.5t trucks), we currently use Towergate insurance (www.towergate.co.uk).

As driver one said Ryder Trucks.

If not do you have a renault truck dealer near you, if ther do rental at your local branch they insure for Europe also.

Without an O licence I think you will struggle to hire a truck to the stage that it’s nigh on impossible, let alone insure 1.

pm shrek,

im sure he hired one a few weeks ago for moving someone or something!

Shrek hired from salford van hire I am quite sure about that.

No problem for a 7.5t for non commercial use. O licenses apply to vehicles used for the carriage of goods for hire or reward.
In this instance, he won’t even need to put a tacho disc in.

… or, thinking about it, have the tachograph exemption rules on private use changed recently?

Yes, the exemption for private use is limited to vehicles not exceeding 7.5t.

Some trucks which have digital tachos are wired up so that you can’t start them unless you have a digital tacho card in. If you haven’t got a card, it might be worth getting one

im not doubting you on this but what about if you lose your card or its damaged? surely they cant do this legally?

Most newer trucks deliberatly come in just below the limit of over 7.5t and are actually 7.495t! Anyone who has the qualification on their driving license can hire a 7.5t (7.495t) for private use without an ‘O’ license or the need to use a Tacho of any sort!

I know, I’ve gone through it with enough people!
