Shock horror! Hermes drivers earn less than minimum wage!

theguardian.com/society/201 … P=ema-3371

This whole “you’re self employed” scam, common knowledge really. Don’t know why the papers are so surprised by it.

Too many players in the market all trying to find ways to undercut each other, and still make a profit…
I don’t really know why they do it, but needs must when the devil drives I suppose, and most of em drive like him as well!
I guess some do it as they have a car licence and it initially looks like a good option at the company sell. :unamused:

I suppose the government could put em on Tacho’s which might help, but more importantly bring in a bit of revenue when they also make them do a DCPC as well!

As I’ve said before, the government needs to tighten the rules on being self employed! :imp:

Ote earnings doing Hermes are usually 500-600 per week according to the local lady that does it that’s over 7days many people do it to earn a little more as it can he fitted around your other commitments’ and being self employed means the minimum doesn’t apply in the first place they have to provide there own insurance these days too as well as owning the van cars are being phased out

My local Hermes subbie has just bought himself another new car/van thingy, its his third in the last few years

TBF, he is a grafter, and is at it pretty much every day, but he seems happy enough :bulb:

He also has another “courier” customer, who he piggybacks with his Hermes work, and he does “Next” as well, clever lad ain`t he

Am I the only person that doesn’t blame Hermes for this? I could get a van and be on there tomorrow. But I’d be taking a massive pay cut, and dealing with hmrc and the like is not worth the agg without a substantial increase in wages. If nobody worked for them, the rates would have to go up. Too many idiots with floored business models :open_mouth: :unamused:

Spot on, you could say the same about Maritime subbies?

If you worked out how many hours most class 1 drivers who do 4 or 5 nights out each week they will be on less than minimum wage

“The arrangement is legal and is approved by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.”

Says it all really.

Same old guff. Zero Hours Contracts, Periods Of Availability, Swedish Derogation for Agency Workers. The government seem to think of big companies as Cheeky Chappies who are just trying to make a living and should be exempt from the nasty bits that they don’t fancy. Like opening a Bag Of Revels and leaving all of the Orange & Coffee Creams for whoever comes next.

Cheeky Chappie legislation.

You must follow the rules, unless you don’t want to follow the rules. In this instance you will need to prove that the benefit derived would be for a corporation rather than an individual or group of individuals  . Ooh Orange Cream, don’t mind if I do Mr Hermes.

MTL Subbies from the Indian Sub-continent seem to think they are onto a good thing, I know one that is so happy on there, that he does two shifts a day, well made up he is, money for old rope he says innit :open_mouth:

myhermes usually deliver to me when the wifey arrives with the kids in the back of the car after school,or if shes busy her man delivers stuff for her…class act all round. :unamused:

What about all these foreign trunkers - working over here for days at a time, hogging our laybys, parking under motorway bridges - and all being paid MUCH less than our UK minimum wage - which is “supposed” to be illegal - but things that help the corrupt EU economy just get brushed under the carpet alas…

There’s grounds there for voting for Brexit for even the most liberal of the electorate - if you’ve lost out over the way the EU do the wrong thing all the time…

Turkey is the same… Cheering on the wrong team as ever!

That’ll be the entire bag the moment you open it then… Can’t remember the last time I got a substantial number of choc peanuts, buttons, and choc raisins in one of those “revel” bags.

You are absolutely right. And a minimal amount of the little toffee ones that used to called Treets, back in the day.

Nothing much changed then with subby couriers,
I spoke to subby once a few years back he was quite happy making a "good living"as he put it,never made a profit,to put by for future vehicle replacement or other incidentals, everything came out of his wage.

You are mixing “hours at work” up with “hours away from home”. I do expect to get paid for all hours at work, however I do not expect to get paid for all hours away from home any more than a contract sparky/plumber/ plasterer who works away from home all week would.

This ^^ of course is how the “interpretation of WTD” gets abused to abuse us all as working drivers…

“48 hour average working week” in my mind should be either “48 hours at work maximum” OR “48 hours at work averaged over a reference period” and NOT "48 hours of pay, 48 hours of driving but 80+ hours of “being at work” - if that’s what it takes because of traffic jams, waiting time, breakdowns, etc etc. which are everyday things in this line of work.

And sick pay, holiday pay, pension…Do they all have those? It’s firms abdicating responsibility. Makes it harder to employ people on a proper basis as you are no longer competitive.

I reckon that if everyone, especially companies - followed EU directives regarding the transport industry to the letter as originally written in law - we’d HAVE no transport industry, as they would have all ceased trading by this point.

Look at what is happening to essential supplies/raw materials/food for example… Companies that are grossly inefficient being bought over by foreign megacorps and then run at a loss “because the megacorp can afford the leak” - whilst gaining more and more control over actual essential services on the cheap… The UK would not be allowed to do such a thing in most other countries on Earth - so why does the UK let “everyone else” do it to US? :frowning:

I work for Hermes through agency on class 2 (nights). Rate is 11.25 an hour. On contract its around £10 an hour but you get around £300 bonus a month. The work is very easy and no stress.
