I had a couple of jars with an old mate of mine last night who works for a very large company, (they employ 50,000 worldwide). Now I worked with this guy years ago and he always looked after his wagons, keeping them clean and suchlike, he was telling me that the company he is with gave him a new MAN last September so he did his usual and spent a lot of time blinging it up, it’s a 6x2 tractor, he brought stainless wheel trims, an extra chrome light bar with lights, LED’s, spent a fortune on autosol polishing the tank and anything else he could shine up, plus he spent a few hundred quid inside the truck as well including the obligatory frilly curtains, he showed me a picture and it looked stunning, he said he polished it at least once a week and looking at it you would never think it went out of the yard, he tells me that in January one of the regional directors was visiting their yard while he was in there and the guy told him that his truck did not reflect company policy and to remove everything that was not standard on the truck, he argued his corner but ended up stripping all of the extras from the MAN, he was gutted and tells me that although he cleans the inside and the glass he has not washed the truck since the middle of January, what a sad tale, some companies would give their high teeth for drivers that looked after equipment like he does, pity not all of them!

Patriots,is the Magic Word
whilst i sympathise with your mate who takes pride in the vehicle he drives from what you have posted it does sound as if he may have gone OTT and made it look like a feastground round not all companies like this image unless they are running feastgrounds

driver to boss, we aint had a pay rise for 4 years…
boss too driver, you cant be that bad off spending all that on my truck…
nobhead springs to mind.
Sad really, I’d sooner rather employ someone who really looks after the lorry and spends money on it despite not being theirs than someone who trashs it and leaves it in a mess the whole time.
sounds like freightliner, they arent bothered if they are even washed
when i was there the outside pipe was frozen for a few weeks and there was that much dirt on them that eventually it started falling off in chunks.
The only stuff I’d buy, is for cleaning the inside. That’s my space. Sod the outside.

Unless you have 38 years plus as an artic pilot (which he DOES) I don’t think you have the right to call him that!!!
Pride is the word most drivers are missing from their vocabulary today. That is why there is so many [zb] trucks on the road.
No not Freightliner.

Reed Boardall like a clean truck, apparently if a director sees a dirty one on the road he’ll get the traffic office to get you to come back and wash it…
While I think some bling can look good on a truck, I for one wouldn’t buy it for a wagon that isn’t mine. I’m quite happy to wash it every day and keep it clean inside at the companies time and expense. I’m sure most managers would be happy enough if you kept it tidy, drove it properly and didn’t smash it up.
I would not spend my money on someone elses motor, though I would keep it clean with their power washer in their time.

Reed Boardall have their own truck wash which you are expected to go through every time you come back to the yard before you drop the trailer.

My views also
I have never spent a penny on extras that were not paid for by the company, if I owned the truck it would be different. Our company does not allow us to put lights on our trucks but soes insist the trucks are kept imavulate when ever possible, they even let us visit Blue Beacon a few times a month for a professional wash and brush up.
One of our drivers spent a small fortune on lights to put on his truck and the bosses told mechanics to strip them all off at the next service.
I remember a good few years back when a certain Irish company that gets a good few mentions on here had a driver called David Doubtfire working for them & he spent an absolute fortune on a Scania that he drove for the company, he put spotlights on, alloy wheels on, did all the cab out, even put two big old chrome stacks on that earned him the nickname, ‘Shiny Pipes’ …
Re: the other posters reference to, “If you can afford all that, you don’t need a pay rise!” Thats basically what happened, he left or got the push I don’t know which, then the next pilot came along & inherited all the bling for the same wage, conditions etc, etc. Dave was forgotten about inside a fortnight!
Rest assured though he put paid to any kind of pay increases for a good while, if ever!!

According to one of their old drivers, before Stirlands of Nottingham were taken over by TDG, Jack Stirland used to keep an eye out for any of his lorries leaving the yard in a dirty condition, and if spotted the driver would get earache off him.
