Sherran's ... and other Manchester firms

Some good pics there John… While driving for an agency back in '76 I was driving a D1000 van for Hoover / Flockvale at Worsley Ind Est.
Hadfield’s were also carrying for Hoover back then as well, using Bedford TK and Marsden pantechnicans mostly, Hadfield’s have also done a lot of delivery work for Barcrest - Ashton ( the gambling machine people.) While on holiday at Pontin’s - Blackpool in the early '90s, I remember seeing one of their lutons parked up in the centre of the camp, having gone in to make a delivery and brought down a low hanging telephone wire, it must have been the drivers worst drop with kids and overhead cables.

Hi blackie622.
Thanks for the info regarding Joseph Hoyles,I didn’t realise they had so many depots, that suprised me.

Tipit–Thanks for the coments about Hadfields will try and get some more pics next time I am down there.

Harry Evers FODEN photo by P Davies (British Lorries of the 60s)

Taken whilst making a delivery in Mossley J G Winterbottom local haulier from Hyde.

This one taken somewhere in the back streets of M/chester during the 60s/70s Any ideas TIPIT.

Stanfield:
Taken today whilst passing their yard Oldham Rd Manchester.
Hadfields who were once a removal firm originate from Old Street Ashton U Lyne where they were based during the 50s before they moved to sheply ind estate in Audenshaw nr M/chester and then moving to the depot they are in now.

They now have quite an impressive fleet of motors. These are just a few.

Strange just seen one of Hadfields in Southsea Portsmouth about an hour ago, hand balling a fancy icecream fridge of the back of his truck.
on Osbourne Road, the reg number struck me think it was J7 HAD !

Hi yonmons–Yes you would be right with the Reg Number they seem to have a few ending in HAD.

Anyone remember this firm around M/chester—D&M Demolition.

This one brings back memories John, a time around '63 when a long line of Evers ( was it Henry Evers ?) James Booths from Westhoughton, and about 6 of Lamb’s were all lined up to load at Salford Docks. I must have been around 7 years old at the time and my dad had lifted me up onto the diesel tank of one of these Foden’s with the body raised, all I can remember was a group of drivers where looking round the wagon for some reason.

Yes I remember D&M (were they Brown ?) that white building and chimney in the background looks like it could be St Mary’s Hospital.
Another around back then was Kavanah & Mannion from Redgate Lane, Belle Vue.
There is another tipper firm I’ve not seen around for a while, I think they were called “Glenmere,” dark green 8 wheelers with high bodies, based beside Didsbury station near Parrs Wood Tesco.

Paul.

Hi Paul
Yes I remember Kavavnah&Mannions but can’t recall the other company from Didsbury. It was Harry Evers.I remember a story once told to me by their mechanics years ago.Old Harry Evers apparently lived in South Africa and used to visit here now and again,at the depot in Ancoats they had 2 flags what were always raised outside and when he was over on his visit they used to lower flags to half mast so reps and such knew to keep away.apparently he was a bit of a contancress old sod.Ask your dad if he remembers that happening.
John

It’s a good thing old Harry didn’t see me stood on one of his diesel tanks then ! :open_mouth:
My dad once told me of a time he had broken down in one of their wagons on the Gatley section of Kingsway (late 50s) and was waiting for the garage to bring a part out to it. Some fella in a big posh car pulled up and said he owned the firm, and as he’d noticed he had not been trying to fix the wagon himself to collect his cards when he got back too the yard. When he told the T.M. what had taken place, he told him to ignore the old fool, if he listened to him every time he threatened that they would have no drivers left.

IIRC D&M Demolition was an offshoot of AJ Carke Demolition of Featherstall Rd; Chadderton; ‘Curly’ Clarke was the boss man of AJ Carke and I sure D&M Demo; was the company his son-in-law Dennis ran  Mr. AJ Clarke (Curly) was also a director of Thomas Harrisons (Haulage & Storage) Stanley Rd; Chadderton in 1970 - 1974 met him more than a few times as I worked in the traffic office for Thos; Harrisons when I left school in 1970 :exclamation: :exclamation:

Also IIRC AJ Clarke or D&M Demo; suffered a big penalty when one of their worker’s was killed on site during one of their demolition jobs :frowning: :frowning:

hiya,
Not strictly Manchester but nearly, i worked for Holdsworth’s of Rochdale back in the 60s who i think got taken over by Harry Nuttall’s, but the firm i have’nt seen mentioned on here is Rudman’s another Rochdale outfit quite a sizeable company, green coloured motors always seemed to be plenty of them about just thought they should have had a mention,.maybe Stanfield knows of them and has a pic or two.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi harry-gill.Dont know of Rudmans transport but do know of a Rudman Street in Rochdale and I will keep my eye’s open for any photo’s of their fleet.
JOHN.

hiya,
Thanks John the time that i’m talking about when i worked in Rochdale would have been early to mid 1960s, i know Holdsworth’s was only a four motor outfit but Rudmans seemed to have plenty of motors and i was on nodding terms with quite a few of their drivers i think they did a lot of cotton out of Liverpool to the then prolific mills.
thanks harry long retired.

Here’s one of Oldham & Sons Leyland Octopus from Denton They made & supplied battries.Tipit didn’t you say that your dad
did some work for these at one time.

Hiya John, Yes it was him and Frank Duggan taking old batteries too Associated Lead at Chester when Lamb’s were using the D308’s. I remember I had to stand away from the wagon when it was tipping because they said it was dangerous tipping there … then as I was watching, the front tyres lifted off the ground and the body had to be lowered quickly. I always thought it was old car batteries they were carrying but he said they were small ones for Miners helmets.

Paul.

Tipit. Didnt these have a yard at the bottom end of Mount Rd.

And heres another one of Oldham Batterys from Denton

Hiya John, is this the spot that was once Flynn’s ? I think Ovlov said he use to drive for them.

Hello John / Paul
The office block to the right of the petrol station was Flynn’s, the yard was directly behind. They had tankers both powder and liquor and also had plant (RB draglines D8’s tippers etc). They did a lot of land reclamation work at the pits in South Wales and were the main earthmoving contractors when the first section of the M56 was built from Northenden to the A556 at Bowden. I was on the tankers and drove an Atki Borderer XND 171L with a 220 ■■■■■■■ and a 10 speed Fuller. I await a pcture of it appearing on here in anticipation Paul !!!
