Sharing your cab on nights out

Here’s one for you.
My son in law who drives for an own a/c outfit (who you would think would know better :unamused: ) has been asked, (or rather told) that he has to take a new driver with him for 2 weeks to ‘show him the ropes’.
He does 4 to 5 nights out btw.
He does not know who this guy is or anything about him, so he aint too keen…as I would not be either, as I like my own company too much.
He asked me what I would do, and I told him not a snowball’s in hell would I agree to that…end of.

So he agrred and then told them he’d rather not, and elaborated on it, but he said he’d compromise and do a week’s day runs with this guy, …but they aint suited.

I told him if it had been a co. manager or somebody like that who wanted an insight into the job that he would sure as hell be put up in an hotel, so why treat a driver any different.
If it had been his mate fair play, but share 8 to 10 nights out with a stranger in an 85 DAF is a step too far I reckon, a few scenarios could be ■■■■■■, rotten feet, terminal b.o. or raging flatulence  , or he could be a normal decent lad…, but who knows.
(He has a mind of his own btw, I wasn’t making bullets for him to fire, he told me he thought the same as me prior to asking, but valued my advice.)
Thoughts and opinions anybody?

Our mob provide a hotel if we are double manned.
But then again i work for a progressive and modern thinking firm that looks after its staff.

Tbf mate if I told you the co who he worked for (not going to btw for obvious reasons) you would think (as I did) that they would be just that also !

Not happening

I’d make him sleep in the trailer ,unpaid security gaurd practice

I had to do that years ago when I was young and naive.Id had enough of the prick after about two hours.Eventually dumped him and the wagon in Keighley- he couldn’t drive-in went into Leeds and got twisted, got a train to Manny, booked a hotel to the company and got the train back to Liverpool in the morning. It felt great as well

The only concession that I’d make for this scenario would be to break a lifetime rule of not overnighting in an MSA, that way he could book into a hotel every night. It would also depend hugely on the companies attitude towards me also.

Sharing your house with a total stranger - absolutely not a chance, a total red line. I would usually get on with most stuff inc showing someone the ropes during the day, but they don’t know this guy so he could rob your lad the first night and bugger off. Probably wouldn’t but they don’t know that.

My reply would be - “ok, so when a new person joins the company here and its your job to show them how to do the job, would you take him / her home, him let them sleep in your bedroom, give them free reign to your house and be happy for him to hang around with your family while you’re out? No - well WTF should I be expected to do all this for you!?”

There’ll be a clause in the contract about “other duties” but this is way beyond that and personally I’d be muttering about if they think they are going to land this one on “me” (him) then they might need to send him out on his own while I find another job. Should give them a very big clue that he’s not a pushover. Being Robroy’s offspring, I suspect that’s the case.

Btw, do those trucks even have 2 beds?

No Chance, I wouldn’t sleep properly so wouldn’t be a safe driver the following day, I don’t suppose the TM would invite a stranger into is home and let him sleep with him in his bedroom.

Steve

As I don’t do nights out - I’m not really qualified to comment.

As a relatively new driver - I think it’s pretty nice of the company to be helping someone out.

How about your son asks to speak to the bloke and gives him a call or meets him for a coffee.

This is just me… But if I was the lad in that position I might be willing to stick my hand in my pocket and pay for the accommodation. He might just me very nervous - but desperately looking for a job and not even that keen on sleeping in a small cab with a random bloke himself.

Worst case the guy in question is a wrong un and your son can say no in no uncertain terms with real reasons. Best your son can be the top bloke who helped a guy get a chance and wasn’t put out too much.

Nah, Son IN LAW mate,
I managed to talk both my lads out of following my footsteps…(I’m pleased to say) and they both make more money for less hours than I do.

Of course I would.

When the guy shows up I would greet him in my gimp suit and tell him what a fantastic time we will have! I think I will attach a ■■■■■ to my belt as well just in case I’m not being blatant enough. If he is still there after that I’d ask him if he minds sleeping in the ■■■■ and that it might be a tight fit.
IF he is still there after that then obviously I dug myself a deep hole and will have to take it like a champ and just prey he brought some vaseline.

Assuming it all went to plan I will just look a the TM perplexed and ask innocently “what’s that dudes problem?”

That’s what we do when two of us on a job.

I remember years ago getting a press release from a company that had just build a removals van for an international relocation specialist.

It had a double-bunk sleeper cab, and slept another three blokes in a kind of pigeon-loft above the cab!

The mind boggles.

This is when you miss dipper not being here to reply.

Not sure about the being on the job bit.

But the only time I’ve shared a cab when Double manning was with my brother when I first got my licence, other than that whenever I’ve double manned, one or both of us have stayed in a hotel.

Probably end up doing 21 hour shifts as well

1 week I did on agency was delivering furniture, with a porter, 5 night outs in a FM globe trotter.

There was the odd annoying moment, but on the whole we got on fine

No, not a chance. The only time I’ve double manned is with a good mate of mine so it was ok, no problem.

Bit unreasonable to expect your son in law to be a trainer for his co - unpaid as well. Cheeky.

where do you think all the tradesmen stay when they’re out all week? A room each at the ritz?

My best mate used to work in a 2 man team (electrician) out all week and get £60 between them to pay for digs and he always shared a room, whats the difference?

The bloke might be sound and he’ll have 2 weeks of decent craic
