No one has explained to me yet the driver’s rights in all of this?
If an employer says we have this system fitted to our vehicles and expect you to use it whenever possible, is that a reasonable request?
I say no it isn’t, as I certainly don’t want to be travelling at 56mph, 3 feet from the back of a trailer, with the very real possibility of being killed if something should go wrong.
I was reliably informed by boffins in the 1970’s that by the year 2000 (an impossible distance away then!) that I’d be wearing a silver suit whilst piloting my hover car, that of course was if I’d elected to stay on planet Earth and not join the exodus to far away galaxies.
As late as 1980 I was also informed whilst watching footage of a house sized computer that one day there could be as many as four computers in the country!

Maybe one day, deep sea ship voyages will have no humans on board, on a journey from Hong Kong to Los Angeles to London to Cape Town.
Automated robotic cranes will unload the ships containers, if its a bulker, the scoopers will be robots.
What about four or five coaches with one driver ?
Passenger and freight trains with no human driver ?
I think the shipping companies are quite far down the road with automated ships already. I think that’s coming shortly. Concerns like piracy could be easily dealt with using secure hatches, secured control systems. Plus no humans on board to use as bargaining chips.
Aren’t they doing a lot with automated box handling on the quayside already.

I’d imagine they are now. Grain had half automatic cranes in 2003.
If you are a driver who likes to have his name in the window (so sad), will you put your name in the windows of the other trucks in the platoon you are driving ?..
you can get a wi fi signal blocker for £250, terrorists will have a n easy time of blocking all motorways, by just stopping these trains of lorries, whoever thought of this idea must come from a university where reality does not exist

I think that we should have aircraft flying without pilots and shipping without crews first and see how well that goes.

I feel that may be facetious comment but are you aware it is imminent probably starting in Dubai.]
Technology is way ahead of what most seem to realise.
I find it interesting that this quote is aimed at the general public “Individuals generally have fears due to inadequate or incorrect information. Therefore, it is important to make sure that enough information on platoons is delivered to the public”. And yet here we have the scenario of professional HGV drivers with the very same concept of a general lack of knowledge and the very same fears as the general public. We have heard comments in this thread of “fear not it will never happen” “not in our life time” etc, etc. Get a grip and embrace it as it is coming to a town near you in the not too distant future.
You can’t make a computer make decisions like a human Snowman says.
Well I am afraid you can and they can make better decisions.
That has been tried and tested a long time ago.

How true, I am often mistaken for being like a computer.

When people have tried to connect you to 240v supply it wasn’t because they thought you are a computer…

I could certainly see how you would benefit from electric shock treatment.

The problem word here is CAN make better decisions.
It does not mean they always will.!

That is not a problem pyewacket. Not only can they make better decisions they can learn far quicker.
Computers and robots will always be better. They do not get tired. They do not get distracted. They do not get awkward and they do not need a pay packet!

But they do go wrong.
Not as much as human decisions that go wrong, You only have to see how many drivers make the wrong decisions each day, a computer doesn’t go wrong on the same scale therefore = less accidents. Aircraft have been flown by computers for years now. Pilots are merely there in the cockpit as monitoring and in case of malfunctions.

Did you ever find out what was wrong with your two year old trailer? The one with the computer fault, not the fridge fault.

Not saying they never go wrong, I am saying they go less frequently wrong, as an example of how technology has moved on, cars are now so reliable in comparison to how they were years ago that we barely think of them breaking down.
