Self driving lorries. Again. [Merged]

I would like to see the computer that could drive my truck…

But they do go wrong.

Not as much as human decisions that go wrong, You only have to see how many drivers make the wrong decisions each day, a computer doesn’t go wrong on the same scale therefore = less accidents. Aircraft have been flown by computers for years now. Pilots are merely there in the cockpit as monitoring and in case of malfunctions.

Did you ever find out what was wrong with your two year old trailer? The one with the computer fault, not the fridge fault.

Not saying they never go wrong, I am saying they go less frequently wrong, as an example of how technology has moved on, cars are now so reliable in comparison to how they were years ago that we barely think of them breaking down.

Likewise I’m not saying they’re guaranteed to go wrong. Eventually however, a fault will develop, and I’d like to know how the automation copes.
I did see a practical demonstration of a computer making an ethical decision. Autocar was driving when it was presented with a collision scenario. It could not avoid the collision so it had to choose, the bike (which caused the scenario) or the car (an innocent participant). It chose the bike. The rider would not have survived, unlike the occupants of the car.

They will certainly go wrong at some point, from what I can gather on the subject, I don’t think they are planning on removing the driver altogether rather they will be utilising the computer to make the majority of the decisions and have human intervention in the case of a failure? I think that is how it is been sold.

Do computers (as they currently exist) make ethical decisions? They merely follow the programmes put into them, dont they? Given a scenario such as you describe the programme could be modified to take better account of all parameters. The software can be modified, surely? They arent there yet maybe, but they are close to very good.
And what are we comparing these self driving machines to? Are we comparing them to the current absolutely perfect and infallible human being driver?
Will there be failures of software and hardware? Yes. Undoubtedly.
Similarly people suffer from heart attacks, poor vision, slow reflexes, and distractions, somnolence, and sometimes being aggressive, obnoxious, impatient, selfish, ■■■■■■■■■■ Not many machines suffer from the last fault, do they?

Not yet.

You can’t make a computer make decisions like a human Snowman says.
Well I am afraid you can and they can make better decisions.
That has been tried and tested a long time ago.

The problem word here is CAN make better decisions.
It does not mean they always will.!

That is not a problem pyewacket. Not only can they make better decisions they can learn far quicker.
Computers and robots will always be better. They do not get tired. They do not get distracted. They do not get awkward and they do not need a pay packet!

THEY DO GET VIRUSES, THEY DO GET HACKED!!

Watched a bit on tv this morning,BMW will roll of the production line 2020 I think it was,
What they were saying is the problem at the moment is you have the likes of bmw, they have been adding more and more Tec over the years which are now tried and tested with more advances little steps at a time, then you have the likes of google that no ■■■■ about automotive trying to do it at any cost ,that’s the reason behind all the ■■■■ ups that’s happening at the moment

Rumours that the idea for this came from observing container wagons on the A14 are yet to be confirmed. .

Confirmed, they stopped some of use at a vosa site on the 14, when the hammer man was doing his stuff , the other geza downloaded the tacho, then he said that as we were very good at platooning, some lorry builders would like there help in obtaining info from the a14 jockeys
They then down loaded all the good stuff from us and past it on, to see if they could improve on it.
