Securing Unattended Trailers

Hello
I may have to park trailers unattended in a not great location.
They will be empty so not worried about contents but does anyone have ideas or links to products to stop them being nicked?
Are the kingpin locks available any good?

Completely irrelvant and feel free to flame me but my area is full of laybys filled with empty trailers usually EU trailers. it annoys me.

The pin locks we use need a tubular security key, so difficult to pick, plus the mount is free spinning so very difficut to hammer, lever, cut, or grind etc.
Heavy casting so no welds.
.
I’ll have a look to find pic on web

Looks like this.

Pin lock…

As much as you can afford.

Get a tracker of some description.

Locking wheel nuts.

Suzi lock.

Park one blocking the other if possible to slow them down a little.

It’s all about discouraging determined thieves and making them look for an easier target.

If it’s you your self moving them and not drivers then get some more air line ends and weld the red line end up inside swap over each time .

Take the top off a BIC biro, chop off the clip and have a play around sticking the hollow cap in the round key hole, I recon you`ll open the lock in under 60 seconds

If you can open a quality pin lock using that method in under 60 seconds I reckon that you’re in the wrong profession my friend. With them talents you should be visiting banks under the cover of darkness!

The Lock Picking Lawyer on Youtube is the kiddie for showing how to pick all sorts of locks in minutes.

I’d be wary of leaving trailers all over the place unattended however well they’re locked, the value of tyres alone makes them worth stripping for the scrotes out there.

NOTHING is thief proof, if they want it, they’ll take it. :bulb:
Some thieves are a lot cleverer than others.

The point of the locks is mainly a deterrent. Empty trailers are easy to find if your a theif you are likely not to waste time on one with a lock. Far easier just to take a trailer that has no lock.

Yes, I watch that channel and he has featured at least three kingpin locks to my knowledge, none took him more than 20 seconds to pick.So although a kingpin lock would deter an opportunist thief it wouldn’t stop a determined professional.

Im pretty sure 99% trailer theifs in the UK do not know how to lockpick.
The most common tool is the angle grinder :p.

Another one here Harry

I should clarify this is an operating centre, we’re not just dumping them anywhere.

Ive not trusted any padlock since watching the lock picking lawyer

And this is the kind of place they may be undisturbed to crack on with an angle grinder

Even though the use of this site is free, I’m going off the idea of it very quickly…

Honestly, most people dont lockpick. I had a motorcycle stolen that has a massive chain on it and a fairly simple lock. They still choose to use an angle grinder on it.

Lockpicking lawyer makes lock picking look easy. But most thieves in the UK are pretty opportunistic and dont have much skill.

I once removed a pin with the lock still on and swapped it for one from the next trailer so unless there are different ones available then they are not that good .

due to being noisy Angle grinders are so last decade, the new generation of cordless rebar cutters that can cut 12mm+ rod can take out most locks and chains discretely

True but angle grinders are still popular because they are often stolen themselves from the back of a van.
I imagine this would be quite effective as well.

Remove the line couplings.
Landing Legs winding handle.
Jack and then drop the axles on blocks.
Remove wheels.Put them somewhere secure.
That might make em think.
But it will take a while to get them back on the road again. :smiling_imp:

Maybe remove all the wheel nuts except one or two as a quicker simpler variation on the theme.Oh wait where have I seen that before. :open_mouth:
